Topic # 106536 26-Jul-2012 00:26 Send private message

Per the topic, after reading a few threads here and around I purchased an Asus RT-N16 and installed TomatoRAF on it. I then setup a TP-Link TD8840 I had lying around in half bridged/IP Extensions mode.

A couple of quesitons:

The MTU on the 8840 defaulted to 1480. I changed it to 1492, is this OK/required/not required?

What should the MTU on the WAN of the N16 be (defaults to 1500), or doesn't it matter?

Finally, I ran a trace route before and noticed that several times the first packet to the 8840 would report latency of several hundred milliseconds or more. e.g.

... over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 3 ms <1 ms <1 ms AsusRT-N16 [192.168.1.1]
2 467 ms 2 ms 2 ms 192.168.0.1
3 35 ms 74 ms 33 ms 222-152-216-x.jetstream.xtra.co.nz [222.152.216.x]

Any reason why this might be?

Thanks

I had exactly the same issue with first ping on a TP-Link modem in half bridge (not the 8840 but maybe it's common to them all...)

I never did find the reason; in the end I replaced it with an RTA1320 (you can get them for < $5 on trademe)  and all works like a charm now.

For MTU I have both set to 1492 after having some issues (could access some websites but not others)   not sure if they need to be the same, but I just stick with it cause it works.

Hmm interesting, thanks.

I haven't tried anything latency sensitive yet so I don't know if its actually a problem. I would get the DrayTek Vigor 120 as they are less than $100 new these days, but I just now signed up to snap VDSL so I won't bother.

(only problem now is from what I understand I'll have to splash out on the Zyxel if I want to use the N16 unless I can downgrade the fritzbox)
