I've just installed a program to keep an eye on the amount I download and upload on the net. The program I'm using is 'networx', seems to be doing the job.

Anyway, over the past couple of days I've noticed what seems like a fairly large volume of uploading. For example it's showing me I've downloaded 578MB and uploaded 272MB. I haven't been doing any torrents or uploading any files directly. Just seems a bit excessive.

Does this look normal for the usual internet usage these days?

Does seem a bit excessive, considering your upload is usually about a quarter of your download for the month, not a day. Don't have something weird like Dropbox uploading large documents etc? Haven't been uploading Youtube movies? Have any extra laptops/phones on the network that might be doing something?

I had some odd reading like that with one of my wireless NICs. Under 'monitored interface' make sure only the one interface is monitored and also disable accounting of LAN traffic.

After doing that mine has been near perfect.

I checked the setup of networkz, no obvious option for making sure its only my laptop being monitored. But I assume it is?

There's nothing I've been uploading, no vids, pics, documents or anything.

I just checked the hourly transfer rate, there's one hour (19:00-19:59) where the D/L volume is 75.0MB and U/L volume is 107MB. Seems crazy.

Any chance there's some kind of virus effecting things here?

Just found an option which might fix it up -

"Ignore local traffic within the LAN"

When selecting this option it seems require another free software called WinPCap.

Might be worth a crack.

FYI: this has definitely fixed it, now that it's only recording the internet usage we're looking at more a 10:1 downloading over uploading. Seems much more reasonable.

Oh I see, it was giving you the Download/Upload rate for the WAN and LAN? Instead of just the WAN.

Yeah it looks like it now ignores the traffic between the computer and the router (local), and only focuses on the traffic between the router and the internet. So only the actually 'used' amount. Thats my understanding anyway.
