Thomson TG585v7 was the default router ages ago, they've moved on a bit now. :-)

Let me be the first to say TP-Link TD-W8960N, but these are quite old now and probably should be upgrade to a new standard reply.

I would advise against any Linksys ADSL2 modem, which I think is part of the standard reply too.

I'm guessing the external HDD and the printer are both USB connection based, in which case both/one could be connected to a modem/router that supports USB.

I've not done this myself as I find the USB throughput/stability is not up to my standard and I've adopted other solutions.
It's just little things like HDD spin down time and rights access and etc.

My solution without knowing your budget and future requirements would be:
  • Vigor DV120 ADSL Modem
  • ASUS RT-N16 router (Cause you can install TomatoUSB firmware on it and it's WiFi range is pretty good)
You mentioned the Apple Airport express. You may be able to use it as your main WiFi router (1 Ethernet, 1 WAN) with the Vigor until your router requirements are better defined.

I'm from a big iron background and have never taken Apple seriously outside of a LAN environment, so there may be people on the forum who are better placed to advise if a modem & Apple 'router' is a workable solution on an extreme budget.

Oh yer, im from a heavy Windows family and my course next year it is better if you have a mac so i got a cheap one.

Anyway my budget is about $300 or something  I need good range and probably dual band so less interference and probably and '802.11n' router and also It has to be good for gaming as the xbox 360 and im a bit of a gamming person so I have my eyes on these 2

http://www.computerlounge.co.nz/components/componentview.asp?partid=16964

or The newest Airport Extreme, because of the good integration for my Airport Express

But im leaning towards the Netgear DGND3700 v2 router it looks very good and just I want.
