can you try changing the channel on your wireless router. Sometimes that has worked for me. It should not affect your other devices.

You should aim for Channel 1, 6 or 11.

While looking for the Channel setting I found firewall security and unticked Filter Multicast and Filter IDENT(Port 113)

That just left Block Anonymous Internet Requests filtered.

I have no idea what they do but it worked!!!!!

Any idea what security monster I have unleashed on my network by unticking them?

Thanks everyone for your help, I really appreciate it :-)

EDIT: NO I HAVN'T Well that didn't last long, as soon as I rebooted the machine it went back to not working.

BTW channel is set to 11.

Just an update,

I bought a new balkin wireless router. Can't connect to that either.
I took it back to Harvey Norman, and they looked at it and couldn't fix it either. Apparently W8 is meant to be better at wireless than W7.
Their only solution was to reinstall windows 8, which I had already done .

So I might have to wipe the whole computer and reinstall. What a nuisance...

Have you tried removing the wireless settings for that network, searching and connecting again?

I also had a problem with my Windows 7 laptop that would randomly disconnect from my AP - any AP. I changed Compatibility mode in Device Manager from high Performance to More Compatible and it now works fine.

I have come to the conclusion that its a hardware fault.

The connections that I have had via wireless only happen when the network connection has first been established, and I found that they fail to reconnect after rebooting the machine.

I have finally given up on this machine, now a bigger battle takes place, how do I get harvey norman to take back a 1 week old laptop, that they sold me with win 7 installed and I return with win 8 partly installed?

Just use the restore partition to reset it to factory defaults?

They don't exist any more, i didn't anticipate gong back to W7 when I installed W8. I have loaded up another version of W7 and am waiting for the 130 window updates to finish downloading. Looks like the wireless isn't working under W7 either.

Here is a tip (late): just after unpacking a laptop, before doing anything else, insert a 16GB USB key and create the recovery media. Then delete the recovery partition to get a few more GB storage.

It's handy to have it for example in case you want to sell the laptop later with the original OS (and don't want to give away your copy of OS). Or to restore in case of things like this. I keep those with the original box.
