dymatrixnz: Ill check. If it happens stationary does that mean possible issue with voltage and if its moving its thoes dodgey SCA connectors?
Not really. More information is always useful to figure things out.
Personally I would not use it again until it is sorted in case damage is possible. Maybe it does not have a good earth and is earthing through the speakers for example. Doubt it, but stranger things have happened.
Are you confident you got the harness right? Matching two different harness systems can be tricky.
You also need to strip the insulation back enough so that the wires meet each other in the centre of the connector, but is hidden by the overhanging plastic insulation on the connector.
Those connectors also come in three colours - red, blue and yellow, which are for small, medium and large cables, respectively (I forget the actual AWG ratings of each). You have red, which is the right size for a stereo loom, but blue would be ok, yellow not so much.

Yeah I'm confident the cables were all in the right place. Ill actually check all of it again.
I saw a video of using solder and shrink tube. I think might be the best way to go to avoid any issues around missing the connectors etc. Its hard to see when your using the crimping tool.
I really hate how the local sony headdecks only come with a bare wire harness.
IMO you would have been better off getting an aftermarket sony harness that terminates in a ISO loom so you can plug it straight in. Which is what should come in the box with the stereo if sony NZ were not being cheap when importing (Europe gets ISO harnesses in the box)
Ok so i took another look at it and it turns out I didn't ground it properly during my harness rewiring job. Everything works as it should no smoke no fires and no randomly switching off.
It must have been coming loose when the car was moving.
Here is the finished product anyway. :D
All i need to do now is get the remote wires in the back properly so the sub and amp work.
