Hi There! I am completing a DIY Electronic component kit which I sourced overseas. I have damaged (I think) one of the key components and I need to source another 1-2. I found it in various overseas locations but Jaycar and RS Components don't have stock locally, and Element 14 want to charge $25 for them including freight. The component is called HLMP-6000 and is found online for reference here. Anyone know where I might be able to find a few of these in NZ?

Looking at the datasheet, it reads to me like you the HLMP-6000 is simply a red LED with a forward DC current of 50mA which is made to be panel mounted with 90 degree axial legs. If you don't mind waiting 1-2 weeks then check out ebay. I've sourced a lot of eletronic bits and pieces from Hong Kong and China. Usually $1-5USD for 10+ quantities and free shipping.

Thought that might be the case. Have a browse anyway. A lot of those businesses have alternate shipping options for a bit more of a fee.

Here is the closest available one I can find on RS: http://newzealand.rs-online.com/web/p/visible-leds/1934746/ HLMP-Q102, datasheet doesn't mention it but reading between the lines, it's a high-intensity version of the one you have, I'd guess it to be an adequate replacement. Interestingly I have been told by the kit I can substitute a 475Ohm 1/8th watt resistor in it's place. I can only find 470ohm 1/4 watt. (Jaycar and surplustronics)

(Jaycar and surplustronics) Most resistors are 5% tolerance meaning a 475 ohm could actually be anywhere from 451 to 498 ohms from right the factory but we still call it 475 ohm. Your 470 ohm resistor will be close enough, you could always throw a 4.7ohm in series with it if it's a bit down (but measure them to see how close you are). If it is just the resistor to limit current for the LED then 470 Ohm is fine. You can never have enough Volvos!

I am going to use the resistor for the time being. Apparently the LED above isn't a suitable replacement as it suffers from voltage drop and therefore variable voltage which in a headphone amp (apparently) isn't ideal.
