Topic # 103500 8-Jun-2012 10:42 Send private message

I bought a small program for my PC in April called Finger Print.
It runs in the background and basically allows you to print from your iOS device (I have an iPhone) to your printer. The printer doesn't have to be wi-fi enabled or anything, as the process works through the computer.

It will even print to a PDF (eg, Adobe Reader will open on the screen with the page).

When I bought it, it was US$9.99, but seems to have gone up to $19.95.

Works great for me. When I choose "Print" in an iOS app, my printer shows as available to print to.

Disclaimer: I am not involved with the maker of the app in any way, I just thought it might be useful for people to know about.

Funnily enough I just read a review of it at seandaniels.com yesterday and thought it sounded like a great product. However, I was somewhat taken aback when I discovered the price was now NZ$28.12 per machine installed on!

I think perhaps I can live without it.

I use Printopia but there are free ways of doing this as well (can't remember the free way name). It's easier to pay for it of course.

When I went and looked at the site this morning, I was sure that i didn't pay US$19.95, so I went and checked my invoice - sure enough, it was US$9.95 (NZ$12.95) at the time, which I thought was quite reasonable. I'm not sure why it has doubled in price since April? I don't think it was on special when I bought it.

[update] I see that the new version is Finger print 2.0, and I have an earlier version. That would explain the price difference.

gehenna: Printopia is the way to go.

Printopia is only for Mac though, and I have Windows.
I think Finger Print is the Windows solution (although it is available for mac as well).

If you've got a bonjour/avahi/mDNS server available that you can add manual entries to, and an ipp server (such as CUPS) that the printer is already served from, it's fairly easy to present a printer to iOS devices and it'll cost you nothing.

A quick google search for "avahi airprint" will give several sites with instructions.
