Simple answer is nowhere.

Apple can't supply stock, so retailers will give preference to those on contracts.

The only way you'll get one is to sign a contract and then pay the ETC, or order online with Apple. If you'd done this a few weeks ago apparently stock will ship in the next few days. If you order one now the wait time is rumored to be a month.

The early termination fee you pay if you get into a contract. It probably will end up costing more than the phone outright...

The only options are as explained above then... Buy online from Apple and wait a month, or go to a store, sign a contract, get the phone and pay to cancel the contract. Read the contract to make sure there isn't a minimum period you have to be locked in.

I am not sure a store would sell it to you if they think you want to break the contract straight away.

Sounds like they are more interested in selling contracts than the actual product. If you buy on contract you are essentially paying a lot more for the phone over the 24 month contract, hence bigger profits for them.

I don't blame them. Profit margin selling apple hardware is only like 2% ~ 3% hence they are pushing for contracts at least in the initial stages. With pre-paid they have no guarantee that you won't switch to another carrier or are already customer of another carrier.

Not necessarily true - remember that you have to pay for the plan as well, not *just* the device.

They're not made where the riot occurred.
