Hi got a dumb question and google is not helping ...

Got an iPad 2 Wifi.

On iOS 5.1

Want to put it to 5.1.1 (want to preserve google maps ?and battery life?)

Can you just download the 5.1.1 software and trick the PC + iPad combo to accept it without talking to apple who will surely say no, and still be fully functional?

I have a feeling the short answer is not really but are there any long answers?

Edit:

i know many of you will try to convince me how gooder and betterer the new iOS and the new google maps app is etc etc etc but all i am asking in this thread is the question above.

Thanks

If you can find the IPSW file you can manually install it by clicking Option+Restore in OS X, or CRTL+Restore in Windows, then browse to the file.

I'm afraid that won't work anymore, unless you happen to have saved the digital signatures (you'd know if you had, and then you probably wouldn't be asking).

I download IPSW's from this site

http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/

Windows : Using iTunes, Hold Shift and click update. You should be able to manually select the IPSW you just downloaded.

OSX : Same deal, but instead of shift hold option.

What if you installed 5.1.1 and then jailbreak will it then become functional? How do i do that? Or does it still need to talk to apple?

is your ipad currently jailbroken ?

If so, use tiny umbrella to save your SHSH blobs.

Then see if you can shift update first, if not, then shift restore  to your IPSW.

right, you can still save the blobs. Usually if the iPad is jailbroken and you try updating it, it may encounter problems.

In this case, download the 5.1.1 IPSW for your iPad, shift + update to the downloaded file.

Once done, you should be able to jailbreak with absinthe green p0ison.

i was told you need to digitally sign the update? will the IPSW work out of the box without digitally signing without jailbreaking?

also will i lose data? (yes i will and have already backed up)

Apple is no longer signing 5.1.1 so you can't get the signatures anymore. You can only update to 5.1.1 if you saved the signatures (SHSH blobs) when 5.1.1 was the current version.

For example, if you run TinyUmbrella now then you'll get the 6.0.1 signatures and will be able to install 6.0.1 in the future even if that's no longer the current version. Unfortunately the window for getting the 5.1.1 signatures has closed so it's no longer possible (other than brute-forcing them).
