Hi all,

Doesn't look like this issue has been raised here before, but in the last day my iPad 2 has gone crazy starting to reboot randomly at times.  I've done the soft reset and am facing the fact that the next step is the factory default/restore route which, may lose some stuff.

Not sure if anyone else has encountered something like this?  Did you solve it?
Most googling returns that it has happened to others, and most got an exchange but I think I'm out of warranty periods now.  (Was a gift so will have to ask back etc).  No one seems to have a definitive answer or solution.

Using it normally, then screen goes black with a light down one end edge only and then reboots.  Runs fine for 5 minutes or so and then goes around again.  At other times though it's fine.  Weird, had no issues prior to this one...

I'd give Apple a call - I found their help desk extremely useful. 0800 MY APPLE. They have all the info based on the serial number of the device, so will be able to tell you if it is still under warranty.

Apple will tell you to do a restore, so you may as well try that first yourself. Just make sure you do a backup first and you shouldn't lose any of your settings.

Thanks guys, will check when I get home.

The backup bit seemed amusing, as when I plugged the iPad in it did a backup straight away. That's no good if I've then just backed up the problem?

In the past month I've had two reletives have their mac's go kaput and each time I found the issue was that they simply were not completing any software updates including those that MS office for Mac requires.

Simple reinstall of the OS fixed everything up including repairing permissions. I dont have an ipad so not sure if repairing permissions on an ipad is an option using disk utility.

You might be backing up a problem, yes, so you can always try restoring and using the backup to set it back up and if the problem remains you can restore again but set it up as a fresh install without using the backed up settings.

True, I'll try for the restore and if that fails opt for a default minimum install and rebuild as required from there.  Will also contact apple to find out about warranty situation etc.

Happened about the same time as Hotmail took a dive to external devices.  Don't think it's related, but that was another issue on that day Undecided.  That situation is still not resolved either:

Have you freed up ram by killing all apps? Rebooting does not kill app but i'm not too sure

If reinstalling it back to factory settings doesn't fix it. Did you purchase it for personal use and from NZ (eg apple NZ or a local retailer)? If so you are probably covered by the CGA, as long as it isn't damaged in some way.

This is a common misconception.  Those apps are not running, it's just a list of recently used apps.  iOS manages the background service access itself:

of course ... and when you free them all up suddenly your ipad doesn't crash and speeds up to light speed? a misconcieved misconception in my opinion ... 512mb of ram to cope with 125 apps that when you "re-open" is in the exact state when you last left them ?

Did you read the article? Saved state is not RAM usage. Nor are background services.

Closing apps from the multitasking bar has never sped up my device.  The only reason I would do it is to make the list of recently used apps smaller or to close a faulting app and reopen it cleanly.
