So with the new 6.0-6.1 untethered jailbreak I thought I'd give it a go on my iphone 4.

Will probably put one of the settings tweeks down that allows control of wifi/3g etc from the notification centre.  But is there anything else thats good?

I like the idea of the widgets, but I see that working better if baked in, oh and there possibility that an aftermarket camera connection kit I put for an ipad might work.

Anything else that can be done?

Zephyr is one of the best jailbreak tweaks in my eyes. Saves your home button by being able to swipe from off screen to close apps - or left to right to switch between running apps.

Bitesms is the other must have - quick reply in notifications and quick compose from anywhere soon become hard to live without

Thanks, I like the sound of the Zephyr one.

So apart from tweeks, what else if the point of jailbreaking, are there any "big" apps that are possible - I know you can put xbmc on it - but I don't really see the point of that for me.

Tweaks are basically the main reason. It gives you access to things like the filesystem so you can download files from the internet to your device like a regular computer. Also allows you to theme the entire phone/lock screen.

Some other tweaks along the lines of a fullscreen browser with gesture support, 5 icons row dock

I would google bitesms and intelliscreen too

Just to name a few things I have installed on my jailbroken device
I'm still on an older version so some of these may not be working yet for the 6.1

Zephyr - Recommend this one, so much easier to swipe up and down than use the home button
Bitesms - quick reply for sms
Springtomize - Customize the device, recommend this one
NCSettings - Settings access from Notification centre
CleverPin - Don't enable lock pin when connected to certain wifi networks
FolderEnhancer - extend folders to hold more apps etc
F.lux - warms colours at night to help with eyes
Activator

Intelliscreen X - I dont use this but it may suit your needs, also comes with sms quick reply

Also, if you really want to tweak the device try 'Flex'
only just released and allows you to tweak anything by editing strings directly

Haven't had a chance to try this myself yet

I heard of this one, almost tweet framework or something isn't it.

Thanks for mentioning NCSettings, it's way more integrated than SBSettings, I love it.

Hi - I'll be trying the JB on my iPhone 5 once the dust settles, but tweaks I've enjoyed in the past have included NCSettings (nicer than SBSettings IMO), SMS Plus (I think it was) allowed quick text replies while still using other apps and allowed you to add photos of your contacts in the Message previews, the 5 Icon dock and Folder Enhancer are very useful and there are a couple of tweaks to let you change the wording of your carrier name (Fakecarrier is one). Retinapad on an iPad allows for apps that aren't optimised for hi-res screens to look better. As I have run a few classes to help people understand the world of iOS I've used ScreenSplitr plus iDemo on my laptop so I can mirror the screen on a data projector.

Cheers,
Mike

Other tweaks that are possible (haven't used myself tho') - if you prefer Google Maps app or perhaps Chrome browser on your iOS device you can set it so that they are defaults in hyperlinks from emails, contacts, etc.

May consider jailbreaking just so I can access the file system of SD cards connected via Camera Connection Kit.
Not much else I would like to do, that I know of.
Sending texts from iPad would be cool, but I won't always have my iPad, when I do have my trusty Nokia brick.
Perhaps some customizing of appearance?

Cheers,
Joseph

Is it against the law to jailbreak?

It is certainly a breach of contract at the very least.

Just curious.

Breach of warranty certainly, but I'm 2 years outside that now.  Not sure about legality.  And breach on which contract?  with a telco?  Not sure - I'm not on contract - on prepay, but even signing up to prepay you agree to a TOS that may say something about it.

I think until there's a test case brought before the courts in this country the answer is probably "who knows?". Maybe you could ask your carrier what their thoughts are, call the police or a lawyer and ask them, or perhaps call the Apple help desk. You may get different answers, but mostly I would expect indifference - I seriously think there's more to worry about than what we get up to with our smartphones.

Cheers,
Mike
