Topic # 114533 22-Feb-2013 15:32 Send private message

I am after any suggestions as to how I can track down large increases in data usage on an iPhone 4S.

This is happening on my wife's phone.

She has tried asking 2 Degrees if they can provide any further information and after a false start where they said "we can't tell you due to the privacy act" followed by a further phone call which curiously ended with the same CSR a day later the real answer seems to be that they don't have any more info that could help explain the data spike.

So, is there some sort of log on the iphone or logging application or similar that can be used to identify where this extra data use is coming from.

She has the phone connected to wifi at work and home so most of the time is in wifi coverage.

Some of the usage data from 2 Degrees shows the problem, the first column is presumably the date and time that the usage record was generated and the second column is mb:

Software version is Ver is 5.1.1 (9B206) if that makes any difference to the answer.

Bear in mind the usage records just show total usage for a data session which ended at the time shown. So it might have been running for hours or days before that time, and the data usage might not have been a spike per se. However if she is on wifi most of the time then presumably the amount of time she can have been connected is limited. In this case the times probably reflect the dates and times she connected to wifi and the 3G data session was ended. Maybe she doesn't always connect to wifi - maybe it was turned off for some of the time?

Most obvious question is whether she has iCloud sync enabled.

Thanks n4, I've been through all of those options with her. The strange thing is that this has only started happening this year.

It is a good theory but the times the large usage records occurred do not align with when she gets home.

@sbiddle, she has not set up icloud yet but today I got her to turn the sync off anyway and "hey presto" apple have now set her up for icloud. So in short it shouldn't be that.

Thanks for the suggestions though guys.
