Hey guys,

Thought I'd share some 3G speed tests from my iPad 3 that I picked up this morning just in case anyone is having trouble picking a network ;)

Both tests done outside in Epsom, Auckland. Vodafone are very impressive, almost twice my home ADSL2+ speeds! John R may correct me but it seems like Telecom haven't finished rolling out DC-HDSPA?

Very impressive!

Is this possible on the SGS2?

SGII you own is not Dual carrier but I have had speeds of 14 - 15Mbps DL in many places around Auckland / Waikato on my SGII

My 3G results (2degrees, West Auckland) on new iPad 3rd Gen, 2/5 bars signal strength, not sure if that is relevant

Ping 57ms
Down 5.75
Up 0.40

Cheers,
Joseph

Clearly once the CDMA network is shut off Telecom will have extra spectrum to be able to deploy additional WCDMA carriers.

Future 3GPP proposed specs allow dual and quad carrier using multiple frequencies, so theoretically we may see devices that support simultaneous bands to bond four carriers together. I'd hate to see the battery consumption though and it'd probably get hotter than a new iPad..

prety cool results.

I must say I don't see what all the fuss is over having 4G on the ipad.

I mean, you really only need about 5Mbps (or less depending on bitrate) to stream HD movies anyway, and you aren't going to be downloading many (if any) seriously large files since the HDard drive maxes out at 64GB.

So is there really any point in having speeds faster than 5-10Mbps anyway?

A bit like having a dual core processor and 512MB graphics card just to play mine sweeper and read email

Hi,

Test the "new iPad" in Patiki Rd (Inner West Auckland) on Telecom XT I get:
Ping   43ms
DL      9.25Mbps
UL      1.52Mbps

Not too bad, but well short of the Vodafone number.

Not to mention the massive data caps we current have... Its like having a v8 with one liter of petrol.

When you realise speeds on 3G and 4G are "shared" and more users means less and less bandwidth per user, then you will value having very fast speeds - ideally having a higher tower density would be good too...

Hi - it sounds like the speed results that will be interesting to hear would be Wi-Fi throughput.... seems that some are experiencing lower speeds & signal strength than with previous iPads & other mobile devices.
How are you new owners finding your Wi-Fi? Thanks.

Cheers,
Mike

Hi,

here are some updated tests for me.    These were performed in Mairangi Bay.

           WiFi            Telecom XT               Vodafone
Ping         25                    53                         48         ms
DL       13.64                 10.56                     9.75         Mbps
UL         0.83                  2.28                     0.94         Mbps

The WiFi (using 802.11n on a empty 5GHz band) is connected to a ADSL2 router connected to a nearby Telecom cabinet and is on a Telecom plan.   Going by these results, I might look into changing provider!

We don't seem to have Vodafone DC-HSDPA here.

Regards

Mike

Many 3G sites are tri carrier but the 3rd carrier is not bonded

Mairangi Bay 3G site is not dual carrier yet

I just got myself the new iPad (3rd gen), tried a speedtest from Matamata which is in the middle of an RBI zone. Not very impressive as the one above I hate to say
