I hope I posted this in the right place. I'm updating my Snap account to VDSL, and have been told Chorus will be providing free wiring. The only thing is, I work from home and am moving my computer out to the shed where I've converted half of it into an office. It's already wired up but doesn't have a phone line, so I thought I might as well take the opportunity to look into getting a phone line installed at the same time. The lighting is on a separate pole, and as a result the whole shed has it's own meter, so I'd doubtless need to get the phone line hooked up to that pole too. But my question is, is it worth getting this done so I can have a wired internet connection (Chorus man won't be doing that for free no doubt), or would it be more cost effective to move the modem to a more central location (wifi doesn't reach out there currently) and get a wireless network adapter?

Any CAT5e/6 cable laid between shed and house?





Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their ADSL broadband network faster. Why not spend a couple of hundred to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?

I'd just get some Cat5 run to the shed. Pull a few cables through and you use one to connect back to your existing phone lines if required.

Else maybe a point to point wireless link.

Is there a potential problem with the ext wire solution regarding earth differentials and emf strikes? I have certainly seen fried interfaces using 10base2 coax to connect buildings.

Cat5 etc has isolation on the ports rated to a few 1000v which seems to deal with it. Otherwise fiber isn't that much but doesn't help with the phone.

If you get the shed hooked up to the internet you could easily get another separate phone line with 2talk.
Either an 028 number or a 'normal' landline sort of number and just have an IP phone (or headset on your computer).

Cheaper than trying to get a totally separate landline.
