Someone told me that when the Japanese techs from NEC first started installing NEAX systems into the post office exchanges, they were bewildered by how much new zealanders call each other and massively under spec'd the first couple they installed because they underestimated how different our call patterns are due to the free local calling.

I don't think the Japs ever installed any of the NEAX's, not to my knowledge any way.  All installation was done by NZPO/Telecom technicians.

However when NEC were asked to quote on the specs to supply the NEAX's they were indeed blown away by the Erlangs that they had to spec for, which was directly related to all local calls being free here in New Zealand.
