Hi, I managed to lose the suction dash mount for my Garmin Nuvi 3760.  I ordered another from Garmin and it didn't come with the mini USB cable that plugs into the cigarette lighter.

For exactly the same amount of money I could order the cable from Garmin but was wondering it I could get it cheaper elsewhere.  Have looked at quite cheap ones that put out 5 volts but I think my model of Garmin needs more power.

Does anyone know the type of car charger cable that I'm after?

Cheers.

If it actually is a USB connector then the voltage is defined in the USB standard, not by Garmin. You can test this by connecting it with a standard USB cable to a PC and it should charge the battery. (It will also go into mass storage mode; you may have to turn it off.)

My Zumo happily charges its battery off my PC using the USB cable.

Hi,

Alas my Garmin doesn't hold its charge at all so I need to keep charging it while driving.

There is a micro USB cable slot to connect to PC and charge but it goes into stand by mode when you do that. The mount has a mini USB slot in it so it can charge while driving without going into stand by mode.

When I was looking at the generic cables in the electronics store they reckoned that 5 volts wouldn't be enough. But I do think the price from Garmin, just for a cable, is ridiculous. Especially that when I bought the dash mount I was really surprised that it didn't come with it.

I could just buy a $5 charger off TM just to see if it works and save myself $50.

What happens when you put it in the mount and connect that to the PC?

Hi,

The mount has a mini USB slot and the actual unit with the screen has a micro. I haven't got a mini USB cable to try it with.

The cheap one(s) on TM list compatible models. There are Garmin models listed there but not my 3760.

I want a generic mini USB car charger that isn't the standard 5 volts. Not to be found in my local tricky dickies. :)

All USB chargers are 5V, if it's not 5V it's not USB. The current may vary it could be a high current device and take 1A but I doubt it.

Ok, thank you. So I don't need a special one from Garmin then. I'll have to let them know the generic one would have sufficed.

Cheers for that :)
