Free Broadband Provider Shakes Up Telco Market
New challenger brings free broadband with a homeline for under $50
 
A free broadband service was launched today bringing Kiwis a better deal for their home telco needs.  Market newcomer www.flip.co.nz provides 5GB of free broadband when a homeline is bought for just $49.95 a month.*

“Flip believes Kiwis deserve fair pricing and no contracts,” says Head of Flip Marketing, Scott Hoogerbrug.

“We have all put up with paying far too much for far too long. By introducing free broadband with our homeline services, we are finally bringing New Zealand in to line with what people are paying overseas”.

A 2011 survey of OECD countries showed New Zealanders paid more for their broadband and homeline than 33 other countries surveyed.**

Hoogerbrug says Flip is challenging conventions by committing to provide free broadband and doing away with contracts and complex pricing models,instead offering a ‘pay for what you need’ approach more familiar to pre-pay mobile customers.

“Flip is not your typical telco.  We want to shake the market out of its complacency, give people the ability to manage their own accounts online and be in control of their costs,” says Hoogerbrug. “There’s no contracts with Flip, just easy online account management, cheap calling and free broadband”.

He adds that intuitive pre-pay online services will make it easier for consumers to budget for their phone and broadband and avoid the risk of ‘bill shock’ at the end of the month.

“We’re taking an up-front and honest approach to our services.  Pre-pay means there’s no nasty surprises,” concludes Hoogerbrug.

Flip’s service is currently available to almost 60% of New Zealand households and the company has plans to extend in areas where demand is high. 

*$49.95 a month includes homeline and 5GB FREE broadband with no contract terms. A one-off installation fee of just $49.95 is required to join Flip.

Pricing looks very good for low usage customers. Not sure what areas they cover though. They say 60% but my address in central Dunedin returns not available in your area.

Only reason I can think of is if they are wholesaling from an LLU provider (rather than chorus which would be more expensive) who has a lot of unbundled exchanges and so can sell them landline+broadband for less.

At curent chorus prices they would make a marginal loss on every single customer at those prices.

Yeah that is what I was thinking myself. Is their an LLU provider with even close to 60% of NZ covered?

tried mine and a few others in Rotorua , nothing found which would back up your LLU theory

They also need to be very careful about advertising ?free? broadband.

The comcom doesn?t like you advertising a free product that requires you to buy something else.

"If something is advertised as free, it must be truly 'free'. This means there must be no extra cost to the customer above the normal price of the goods, whether up-front or built into the price.
For example, 'free delivery' must be just that. It is deceptive to add on the cost of delivery to the price and then claim that delivery is free. If another customer who picked up the goods would pay a lower price, then delivery is not free. Any conditions on an offer to deliver should be made clear, such as if delivery is free only within the central city or only for goods over a certain value.
The same applies to the use of words and phrases such as 'extra', 'give-away' or 'two for the price of one'.
Promotions where customers are offered a free gift for buying a certain item will breach the Fair Trading Act if the cost of the item being sold is inflated to cover part or all of the cost of the 'gift'. Likewise, if a free item is replaced by a discount for those who don't want the item, this may also breach the Act, as it can indicate that the cost of the free item is actually built into the price.
If there are any limitations on the offer, such as 'only with orders over $100', then these should be clearly stated. Items should not be advertised as free if they require the purchase of installation services or additional features.
Advertised promotional bonuses such as free items should be provided automatically, not on the basis of customers having to specifically request them."

I?m not saying they are breaching those rules right now, but I seem to remember Vodafone got pinged a few years back for doing something very similar.
?12 months free broadband? ? when you buy a landline for $50

Yeah it seems I am just outside Slingshots LLU. Can't find a map anywhere of the exact area though.

Random.. My house in Blenheim is able to connect, probably the first time in history that has actually worked in my favour, usually we are the last to see these things :). However i use far more than 5gb so its a no go for me but have shared on FB.

I also noticed in the How it works part instead of 64/64K Capped Rate its 128K capped..... Perfect for people that don't want to tie up the phone line and check email.

Also not sure this should really be under Callplus/Slingshot this is a very separated company NO one from Slingshot would be able to assist with any issues that a customer may have.

I'm sure the com com will be fine with it, it very clearly states it's a freebie that comes with a landline... witch costs less than what a landline is with slingshot, so i see no problem here.

I guess we need to know how they're deploying services. I'm guessing they could be using Baseband IP for the voice with UBA on top it's limited to the areas where an ISAM-V card is deployed.
