Thought I'd give my feedback on Slingshot's Better Network.

Before I begin. I am on the Unlimited Plan.

I was moved over today (22.11.2012) and with tests done today I have seen both an increase in my download speeds and an increase in my upload speeds.

Before the move:

Download: 8 - 15 mbps (depending on time of day)
Upload: 0.6 - 0.8 mbps (depending on time of day)

Sorry, I do not have any recent speed tests on file. I neglected to take one yesterday. Here is one from a month ago though:

After the move:

Download: 16 mbps (tested at 3pm (off peak))
Upload: 1.7mbps (tested at 3pm (off peak))

Usually, I don't bother posting positive feedback. But, I am pretty pleased with this upgrade. I hope the speeds are also good during peak hours, but I will have to see tonight.

I should note that my pingtest results have remained pretty much the same. I'm interested in seeing what my ping is now in online games.

I'll update this post with more details in the coming days.

I was also switched over this week to the better network. Boosted my sync rate by a touch.

However after seeing this thread, I enabled Annex M and rebooted - wow! Effectively doubled my upload rate, and only reduced my download rate by a fraction.

The better network upgrade has taken me from 18/1 to 20/2. Very happy here too!

I wonder if the 'behind the scenes' changes reduce congestion as its not going through a congested ChorusSlingshot handover. I suspect it wont make much of a diff, given that international links seem to suffer the most peaktime congestion.

Sadly I'm moving flat soon and going to Orcon unlimited, does anyone know if Annex M is enabled on Orcon+ (ULL)?

gcorgnet: Hi,

How does one get onto the Better Network and where can I check where it is available?

Thanks,

Guillaume

Just chuck in your address here https://www.slingshot.co.nz/homeline-and-broadband/better-network/. If you are already a Slingshot customer then you may already be on it, otherwise you could ring up and ask to be switched over.

I'm in the better network area but I'm syncing to annex a. Do you have to ring and ask slingshot to switch you?

You should just be able to enable it in the settings of your router/modem. What model router do you have?

Edit: Its also possible that while you are in the better network area, you might not neccessarily be served of better network gear (this was my story, until slingshot switched me over automatically this week).

To find out if you are served by Better Network gear, you can login to your router admin webpage, go to DSL stats (probably called something different/similar) and look at the noise margin. This will be around 6db if you are on slingshot gear, or around 12db if on Chorus gear.

Okay, so that means that while you are in the better network area, you arent being served off the better network gear. Give Slingshot a call and ask them to switch you over. It requires a physical wiring change in the exchange, so may take time

Edit: once they switch you over, you might need to login to your Draytek, go to the DSL settings page, and set the Modulation to Annex M (might be set to 'multimode' at the moment)

Am I right in thinking you need a Slingshot phone line/naked DSL to use the Better Network, and that a setup where I pay Telecom $45 a month means I'm out of luck?

Unfortunately, I had work this evening so couldn't post a peak time speedtest.

Here is one for 11pm 22.11.2012

I'm off to Wellington tomorrow too so I won't be able to update with anymore results.
