I'm getting very slow upload speeds from Slingshot .. - 0.73Mbps..

When I'm skyping, I can see and hear my opponent clearly, but they are saying that viewing my webcam (I do have a HP TrueVision HD webcam and I do not want to reduce my quality if someone asks me to..) is laggy..

Just wanted to find out if I'm the only one who's getting very slow uplink speeds.. Thanks.

Oh, and btw, I used to get around 6 - 7 Mbps download speeds..

Have you had your house wiring checked? See this thread. http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=49&topicid=96226

I'm about 1.4km away from my exchange, and I'm on a Slingshot LLU connection.
I get around 1.5Mbps upload speed due to Annex M.

Around 13.5Mbps Down.

I have a master filter installed, which gave me at least a couple of extra Mpbs Down, and definitely improved my upload speeds as well.

730kbps is pretty stock standard for a regular ADSL2+ connection.

HD Skype requires 1Mbps upstream.

I only talk to this person, whom is in China.. which means that the upload speed would be slower than my current one of around 0.73 Mbps!

And I'm guessing that you/us/me can't see the difference (lag).. only the person on the other end can..?

I wouldn't think so... because I know for sure that my download speeds are of the average ADSL2+ speeds.. It's just I'm not so sure about the uplink..

You should be able to improve this... most connections ive seen that can get over 1Mbps up are capable of 17+ down.

My looking at your wiring for a start. If you don't have a master filter these are essential for the best performance.

Can you have a master filter put in with a daisy-chain configuration?

Perhaps 'System' was running Annex M?

I'm running Annex M and get 13.5Mbps down, 1.5Mbps up.

My attenuation of 27 dB Down, 15.7dB up suggests I'm just under 2km from the exchange.
I have a master splitter installed.
Should I be expecting more down?

Modem reports attainable rate as:
17748 Kbps DOWN, 1780 Kbps UP

Some China routing through some ISP's is really bad.

hinet whoever they are seem ok from a trace, with a ping of 150 msec to hong kong, 70 msec to china, but they have some kind of throttling and china speeds are much faster than out of china speeds.

generally it's considered that china internet is very poor, and can sometimes be improved by vpn'ing to hong kong which is considerably better for connectivity.

as well as this some isp's in nz have temporarily got even worse routing to china if they were connecting via singapore in the past.  and some route china via japan or the US.

as much as i like to say that nz internet sucks for upload speeds etc, i'd recommend trying it with someone in NZ to see if it's "skyping to anyone" or "skyping to china" that is a problem.
