Thought id jump on the bandwagon here.. I have been a Orcon 100/50 UFB customer since July and I tell you it has been terrible! I have had speed tests to Orcon servers with as little as 1mb down.. logged numerous support calls and nothing has been done, at all.

currently getting 20.91mb down / 20.00 up Orcon servers.

Pages time out etc, normally will have to refresh to get anywhere most days.. doesn't matter if local or international..

Higher latency to Australia over my old ADSL2+ connection

Have regretted signing up a week in ever since July.

Sad really because when Telecom start to offer UFB i'm going to have to pay out the rest of my term to Orcon just to get away from them :(

Kyanar: I have also noticed since 2 days ago a sever degradation of performance on my Orcon DSL connection - App upgrades on my phone are actually faster if I disconnect from my wifi which is just backwards. On occasion, I'll simply lose all data for up to a minute or so which can be frustrating as well. Maybe not just a UFB problem?

Similar to my experience with Orcon ADSL in recent days,  the performance has been so erratic with web pages taking more than 2 minutes to load at times.  I reported the issue to Orcon and they seemed to fix the issue,  but a few hours later it was back to behaving erratically.  Speed testing actually shows normal performance, ONCE it manages to load the test page...

EDIT:    Just tested using speedtest.orcon.net.nz and got the following ADSL results

Download Speed: 887 kbps (110.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 527 kbps (65.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 89 ms
Mon Nov 19 2012 17:29:51 GMT+1300 (NZDT)

At this point, there seems to be little point changing to UFB if Orcon can't even get ADSL working reliably.

Similar issues again on Orcon ADSL. Normally get excellent performance (14 MBit plus) to selected US sites and its been down to kbytes/second.

Seems ok today

Still no better here on Orcon Fibre, since install can't get over 2mbit to the USA.  Ticket seems to have been put in the too hard basket with an infinite status of "investigating".  The gov should be mighty happy spending 1.5 billion so kiwis can get slower speeds than ADSL :/

tchart: Its a brand new install (Friday) so I will ring them tomorrow. My guess is Orcon but we will see. Its just hard to explain to the wife why TMZ loads so much slower than it used to :(

The "app" download was an eye opener as it was literally 5-6 times faster on 3G which doesn't seem right at all.

It might be "first world problems" but UFB really is disappointing so far.

Have you had any improvement in your speeds since posting this issue a month ago?

Topic starter here.

Ive been reading this thread every now and then. To be honest things have not improved much. The speeds aren't as bad as I originally posted but its erratic.

Some days are fine and everything is nice and fast.

Some days are terrible with 1mbps speed tests even on orcons speed test. Multiple genius restarts etc. Occurs at odd times too, for example 11pm the other night was dire. Last night, I wasn't home but the wife had to switch to 3g. This morning multiple page timeouts.

I agree with some of the other comments, I will pay the early disconnect fee to switch back to Telecom when they offer UFB.

If performance is poor, surely that's grounds for a waiver of the early termination fee? Would you consider going back to ADSL instead?

Im going to argue this point when Telecom releases UFB so I can hopefully move to them without having to pay out the contract.

Regardless though, I will end up paying if all else fails just to get away from them.

Also, about to ring up so I can get a third replacement of my Genius. No devices can get DHCP when cabled in. Doesnt seem to like statically assigned devices connected to it and if it does decide to hand out an address after hours the speeds are unusable transferring over lan or browsing net.. Both units Ive received have been "refurbished units" so obviously they're junk.

Apologies but I'm on the Genius and not fibre.

Someone has mentioned they were also getting time out errors when trying to browse.

I'm also suffering these issues but only once they swapped me over to Genius (LLU).
Prior to that, I was on the Genius (EUBA) - and it was fantastic, never had any issues.

Anyone else in the same boat? Have lodged an email support request to them via email.

Thanks!

those are adsl services.  dunno why he's talking about adsl.

LLU is Orcon running their own equipment at the exchange.

EUBA is the standard ethernet backhaul telecom/chorus wholesale product. (BUBA is ATM backhaul / legacy)

Apologies, I did say I did refer to DSL. However just keen to clarify if anyone else are getting these random time outs when browsing. Been happening for me last 2-3 weeks on and off.

Just an update, I have over 1 month with Orcon "UFB" still can't break 2mbit to the USA. My helpdesk ticket is now 1 month old, I continue to ask for updates but it remains in a perpetual state of "investigating". My ADSL was so much faster than Orcon fibre, it's been like going back to dialup in comparison. At this point all I can do is wait for Telecom to launch in our area, go with them and try to get out of Orcon's contract. Seems almost fraudulent tbh.
