Hey there,

Moved to St Mary's Bay in Auckland earlier this week and went with Orcon's unlimited service. Currently we've been getting exceptionally poor speeds and was wondering exactly what to try to improve them.



We are about 1.6km (assuming a fairly direct route) from the Ponsonby exchange, which the Chorus tool indicates we're on. Not sure if we've been cabinetised.

Your speedtest is consistent with your modem DSL sync rate, which is pretty poor, even for that attenuation level.

Do you know if you are connected to Chorus gear, or Orcon ULL?

Have you done an isolation test for your house wiring?

I'd expect the issue will be either internal house wiring dodgy, or midspan injection from being connected to ULL gear in an exchange while others around you are cabinetised.

It's highly likely to be one of two things, both of which are in the post above.

- Poor internal wiring in your home

- You're on a ULL connection when you are infact cabinetised

We don't have any phones, the modem is the only thing plugged in. No monitored alarm and we didn't bother plugging the Sky in to the line.

The only thing that we've noticed is that there are *a lot* of phone jacks in the house. 2-3 in every room (2 lines by the looks of things). Doing a bit of hunting around I think I've found where the line comes in to the place and traced it and found where it's split.... I get the feeling this isn't helping at all.



So the current plan is to go and buy this from PBTech and wire it in before the splitters, and add a connection to the rest of the line so that the splitters can plug in to the phone port. Would this work? Is it better to just leave the phones disconnected entirely?

How can I figure out if my area is cabinetised/if I'm from the exchange? Call Orcon?

Wow. Thats pretty bad. A bunch of extra jacks definitely isn't going to help so get the splitter and get the dsl to where you want it rather than every where.

As for cabinets and exchanges look at http://www.chorus.co.nz/sat

Yep! That's what I figured. We used to live next door back in '09 and with Telecom we regularly got 6-7mbit, which I'd be completely happy with. Going to pick one up tomorrow and attempt to wire it in.

This is what the Chorus site shows

After getting off the phone with Orcon they weren't too sure if we were cabinetised or not, but they did say the exchange wasn't the fastest anyway (not sure how accurate that is, I would have thought the Ponsonby exchange would've been upgraded fairly quickly?). They did however turn interleaving off and the attainable line rate jumped up 1mbit, so we're going to see how that goes over the next couple of days + the filter, hopefully will help things out a lot.

If you don't have a phone don't waste your money on a master filter - simply connect the incoming pair direct to a jackpoint and your modem and bypass all the other cables.

Any more than 4 jackpoints on a premises will start to seriously mess with DSL due to the massive reflections that occur. I'd be pretty close to 99% certain that once you remove all these other jackpoints your sync speed will skyrocket.

9dB shows you're on a ULL connection. Chrous run 12dB on their ISAM.

We're renting and I doubt the landlord would be keen for that... theoretically if I put the filter in prior to the splitter we should be good to go?

How does one figure out what connection speed to expect?

There are quite a few factors like:
Ocron connection type, broadband package, distance from exchange, type of exchange, house wiring type and condition, modem type and setup etc.

Maybe somebody with the knowledge can list them and explain how to obtain that information?

What is the best possible speed that one can get on an ADSL connection?

The plot thickens...

The neighbour has had Chorus out twice this week (making it the 5th time in as many months) for similar issues. They said the connection between their box and our demarcs is pretty bad, completely waterlogged and the concrete itself falling apart. They spent a couple of hours clearing water out of it this morning but apparently didn't have approval to replace it and to get together with the neighbour and complain a lot.

I called Orcon and they didn't want to do anything, saying that was pretty normal.

I'm not saying our wiring isn't terrible and I'm still waiting to hear back from the landlord to see if they would like to help at all.

Ugh.
