Hey there,

Since Sunday I've noticed YouTube refuses to load over our Orcon unlimited connection. Currently we're using a Genius Lite in front of a network of AirPort Extremes. Connecting directly to the Genius doesn't make any difference. I use primarily Safari on OS X, but it's happening on our Windows machines and iPhones too, as well in Chrome and Firefox.

The strange thing is that the DNS entries are coming back fine and I can traceroute and ping youtube.com just fine. Tunneling over SSH also works fine. The only thing that I could possibly think of is that we've switched to the Orcon supplied modem over the Dynalink one we've been using before.

Tried calling Orcon about this issue as well as our lack of phone line/dial tone despite paying for a phone and the CSR refused to open a ticket for this until the phone line dial tone issue was sorted out. He mentioned that could also be the cause of our slow speeds, I'm not an ADSL expert so I'm not sure how much truth there is to that.

The strange thing is that if I telnet to youtube and do a manual HTTP request, it brings back the page just fine. As such I'm at a loss as to what it could be. Other sites work just fine (to my knowledge). I'm going to try swap the modems out again and see if that changes anything.

Any other ideas? The flatmates are bugging the resident IT guy and he is at a loss :(

It would appear that we also need a button for "Set ugly workaround" :-)

Are you using the correct DNS servers? I can think of a way in this case that using incorrect DNS servers would cause exactly this issue.

Hey I wasn't done.  It just cuts the issue in half :)

DNS servers for Orcon are 121.98.0.1.  You may want to check the Airport thingy if you're plugging airport into wan.  The other way to go with airport should be to plug genius lan to airport lan and disable dhcp server on airport, which will avoid double nat, but mean you can't use wireless at all if the genius has an issue.

Youtube DNS is likely come back to 74.125.237.<some number>

Something like:

www.youtube.com is an alias for youtube-ui.l.google.com.
youtube-ui.l.google.com has address 74.125.237.132
youtube-ui.l.google.com has address 74.125.237.133
youtube-ui.l.google.com has address 74.125.237.134
youtube-ui.l.google.com has address 74.125.237.130
youtube-ui.l.google.com has address 74.125.237.129
youtube-ui.l.google.com has address 74.125.237.142
youtube-ui.l.google.com has address 74.125.237.135
youtube-ui.l.google.com has address 74.125.237.137
youtube-ui.l.google.com has address 74.125.237.136
youtube-ui.l.google.com has address 74.125.237.128
youtube-ui.l.google.com has address 74.125.237.131
youtube-ui.l.google.com has IPv6 address 2404:6800:4001:c01::5b

Oh actually, reading your post better, I see that it happens connecting directly to genius.  The genius modem isn't that great, why not swap it back to the dynalink?  If you want to stick with genius you may be able to change firmware on it, but I think you're kind of limited for options.

It's definitely an ugly workaround and not really optimal in the long run. DNS was automatically set to the Genius box, manually setting both the Airports and my computer to 121.98.0.1 and flushing the cache doesn't make any difference (they both returned the same addresses).

Assuming it's happening JUST to youtube, and on several devices, and https youtube works.... Phone them back and insist they open a ticket.

Just to be real safe, can you post a link please to a specific video that doesn't work? (Even if you have to get it via a link on someone elses site)

try from windows command prompt:
<other pings removed>
err, i may be confused.  there's a check mtu program for windows on the internet somewhere.

for some reason even with 1500 mtu i can push 1472 from both windows and linux pings, but i can push higher from windows ping to my modem.  even though they're both 1500 mtu.

so err, 1472 may be a better number

ping -f -4 -l 1472 www.google.com
ping -f -4 -l 1472 121.98.0.1

Or if you haev a linux box handy you can try:
ping -M do -s 1473 121.98.0.1

and it'll tell you what your mtu is  as an error coming down the page very frequently.

Switched out the Genius for the Dynalink, YouTube works just fine. :S The only reason I went with the Genius rental over the found-dirty-in-a-box-at-work Dynalink is that UFB is coming to my street in the next few months and as I understand I need a router that supports VLAN tagging. Think I'm just going to return the Genius as I've had nothing but issues with it (and the Dynalink will do PPP IP extensions = no double NAT).

Cheers for the help anyway :)

You aren't plugging the phone directly into the wall are you?  The Orcon Genius is a Naked DSL product so when you switch to it they disconnect your phone line - your phone is now delivered via the "phone" port on the Genius modem through your DSL connection.  Unless you have extra hardware to connect your phone to Orcon's VoIP service, you can't use it.

According to Orcon our phone line isn't VoIP, I made sure to confirm that with him.

Then something is very odd - Genius is an EUBA product which they won't (or can't - don't know which) deliver over UBA.  It's not possible to use it over a standard UBA connection (Chorus Wholesale).  Methinks the CSR has led you astray.

Not necessarily nowadays, you can opt to rent Genius without using it for your VoIP service.

I can easily confirm if the OP cares to PM me with an account username or number ;)

I can confirm; OP is on an LLU service with LLU provided POTS.  So phone should work plugged into the line.

The Genius modem's on an old firmware but it is a stable one, fine for DSL, can't think of any reason for it impacting on your Youtube performance... you could try a factory reset?

I called Tuesday about it and supposedly a tech was meant to come by today at the latest, no show yet so I've called back to rearrange for them to come out.

Do you think this could be related? http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumId=82&topicId=111660

Haven't tried a factory reset yet, seems it came loaded with someone else's settings initially. Will try that when I get home. At the moment the Dynalink is working fine, I may end up just returning the Genius.
