Hey guys I was thinking last night I am getting setup on fibre this month on the 100mb/s option and then it crossed my mind is the genius modem going to be able to pump that Internet speed through as it is only 100mb Ethernet and dosnt support 5ghz wifi for my apple gear that all supports it. I work in retail in electronics and my belief is you would be better on gigabit Ethernet and 5 ghz wifi as it will possibly eliminate any instance of the Internet waiting on the modem/router well you can say that for Ethernet as wifi connections are rather hit and miss which is always hard to explain to people because it relies on a lot of factors to get good reliable wifi

Ummmmm, so the answer is yes the maximum speed the WAN can throughput is 100Mb/s, I suspect the Genius should be able to NAT close to that speed, and the LAN ports also are 100Mb/s, so sorry I dont understand your issue, yes gigE ports would be great, but the WAN is still only 100Mb/s. As for WiFi, other than interference issues aside, what can you not do on 2.4GHz that 5GHz will allow, sure it has the ability of a clean 40MHz channel, but in reality once your a few meters from a 5GHz AP it all stop anyway, again I dont understand how this will become such a concerning limitation. And other than the occasional bit file transfer, what exactly applications are you and all your household going to be doing simultaneosly to to flood a 100Mb/s channel. Cyril

Remember, the UFB products are 100mbit or 30mbit at layer2. So at layer3 and above, you will only see 85-90mbit of true internet performance.

And remember that 30/50/100Mbps are best effort speeds. There is no guarantee of actually receiving them. Sounds like most of your traffic is actual local WiFi LAN traffic. I'd recommend going and buying a good dual band WiFI AP. There are plenty of options around the $300 - $400 mark. *Need help configuring your Linksys ATA or IP Phones for New Zealand? Hi, a full HD stream of any internet derived material will be only around 5Mb/s max, even full broadcast stuff only occasionally moves over 10Mb/s, even if it were pulled from a BD it will rarely exceed 12-15Mb/s, so fast ethernet 100Mb/s is fine even if there is multiple devices. Dont forget no iOS devices have more than one radio chain (even the lattest ipad3) so in real use they are unlikely to be able to exceed a 50-60Mb/s rate, and then you can cut that by 1/3 if there are more than a couple of devices in the environment due to collision control, dont ever believe the advertising material on WiFi speeds, its all bunkum. As steve says, just get yourself a decent dual band AP, but make sure its one that can simultaneously operate both bands, ie has independent radios internally. Cyril

Just go get a nice gigE router that supports 5GHz 802.11n and VLAN tagging and skip the Genius. We're using a network of AirPort Extremes with a Dynalink router (no UFB yet) which works pretty good for our internal LAN. World famous Twitter hacker.

Seriously, don't waste your money. I've been on Orcon fibre for a month and still can't get over 2mbit to the USA, even my ADSL before I got hooked up on fiber was so much faster. I have spend a huge amount of time trying to get their helpdesk to rectify the issue to no avail. The ticket remains at "investigating" for over a month. Prepare to be disappointed in "UFB". end rant
