Topic # 138931 22-Jan-2014 09:29 Send private message

I left my house for a week going camping and when i returned, nothing changed, my internet starts downloading at 300kbs max when it used to be 2.5mbs max. i called orcon after having two useless representitives hang up on me, a third helps and "refreshes" something over there to do with my internet, as well as completely reseting my router, belkin 1600. The speed doubled for an hour or so then it dropped back down to 300kbs.
Nothing so far works and i dont know how it happened.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router
- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing - you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap
- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing
- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan
- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)
- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)
- Your general location (or street)
- If you are rural or urban
- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin
- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service
- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)
- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Something broke ;-)

As per PM the technician you spoke to (who logged the fact you got disconnected), carried out a full set of remote diagnostics on your line, a full reset of line and cpe moved your line speed from 3300 to over 10k.

Looks like you have a line or cpe issue, as per pm I'll have one of the team call you, we'll ship out a replacement cpe and roll a tech to check the line and/or change the port.

As another question FireEngine, why do sync rates slowly decrease over time?

I've gone from 16800/1000+ to 14300/950.

Is this just a case of more people coming on the exchange etc?

Line speed isn't affected by exchange load or contention. Line speeds don't naturally decrease over time but there are many factors in the port/cpe/line quality that can cause a reduction. Have you rebooted your cpe? Does the sync rate go back up?

Related/Unrelated question. (Let me know if you want me to make my own thread).

I got orcon VDSL last friday 17th January and the speed has decreased from 18/1 on ADSL to 14/2 on VDSL. The technician did not install any splitter (apartment building?) Its coming close to a week, do I call up Orcon and tell them I want to be switched back? I've posted in another thread before (VDSL launch one) but got no response. Any help FireEngine?

We've run some check and restarted you router but it looks like there is a physical issue with the line, probably the jumper or the new VDSL port you are running on seeing as all was good on ADSL. We will be rolling a tech and will be in touch with the ETA.

Thanks mate, if it helps the Chorus guy said its because the exchange is quite a distance away and because I live in an apartment block. If that is the case, would not mind changing to ADSL2+ back again. I tried that on the day VDSL was installed, the rep told me I had to wait for 7-10 days to not get hit by an early termination fee.

Just an update, the chrous guy said there was nothing he could do, he was seeing the same sync rates at the exchange. I guess I am just going to call back tomorrow and change back to ADSL and make my account off-contract like it was before the VDSL change. It will be 10 days tomorrow anyway. Speed has stayed the same (~ marginally gotten slower from 16K sync to 14k). Thanks for your help FireEngine!
