Where are you based and what international speeds do you normally get? Maybe try a different server in the US on speedtest.net.

Hi antnz, I'm in Hamilton and just recently got cabinetised to ADSL2. I was getting 13000 - 15000kb/s to Chicago but now I'm back to ADSL speeds 2500 - 2900kb/s. And getting worse.....

I get about 4.5 MBit to orcon with a 600K upload..
To LA I'm getting 4.9 MBit with 350K Upload.
I'm currently on Orcon Home + but stilll running and ADSL modem..
When I have tried an ADSL2 modem against orcon i've never broken 5MBit.

3. If you are not an unbundled customer on the Orcon+ network (i.e. you are on the traditional Orcon network) then cabinetisation should have no adverse affects on your connection. Indeed, you should find that your broadband performs better (and you may notice that you are on ADSL2+). The only downside is that until we get the rules around Sub Loop Unbundling (installing our Orcon+ network equipment in the roadside cabinets) we wont be able to unbundle your connection and deliver the Orcon+ network to your door. These rules are due to be finalised early this year, and we may be connecting customers around the middle of the year from our own equipment in roadside cabinets.
According to Part 3 Orcon says I should have no adverse affects...But as you can see by my International speeds something is very wrong. Surely lack of International bandwidth can't drop your speeds by this much..can it? I was getting speeds between 13000 - 15000kb/s to Chicago now its dropped to 1205 kb/s going on my last speedtest. Could this be the way Orcon route International traffic? I'd be interested in trying an ISP like Snap or maybe even Telecom to see if I get improvement. What do you suggest?

Do a speedtest or two in an off-peak period, i.e. first thing in the morning. And try a different national speedtest server (that Hamilton one looks suspect based on the ping and distance... almost as if it was bouncing off a US node in the route). Post your connection stats (sync rates, attenuation, etc.) from your modem too, as a matter of course. For comparison's sake, I'm on Orcon ADSL2+ bitstream (Telecom wholesale) via a cabinet in Central Auckland, with roughly 18000/1000 sync rates. I've just run the following off-peak test:

Just to note...the Hamilton Server speedtest is a little island off the east coast of the U.S called Bermuda...lol...not Hamilton NZ. Just in case there was some confusion. I'll have to call home for lunch to test off peak speeds as I'm at work from 5:00am. Surely though a speed decrease of 10,000+kb/s is not just caused by peak time traffic and low available bandwidth is it? If it is then we have a big problem here in NZ.

BazNZ: Surely though a speed decrease of 10,000+kb/s is not just caused by peak time traffic and low available bandwidth is it? If it is then we have a big problem here in NZ. Well, you have to eliminate each step along the way before you can reach that conclusion, especially you -> cabinet/exchange and cabinet/exchange -> Orcon. Once you can demonstrate to Orcon that Orcon -> international is the weak link in the chain, and give them a traceroute or two, then they'll be more inclined to look at their routing and network monitoring data to find the problem. It really is important to find the root cause too... even if you have to wade through a few clueless support personnel before you find someone who actually gives a damn.

Looks like it is a peak traffic issue, not limited to your connection. I just recorded this at 6:18 pm: Similar result to Sydney as well. A test I ran two months ago at a similar time recorded 4900 kbps, so it seems as though things may have gone downhill since then. These sorts of speeds are almost as bad as they were back in May/June of last year, although I'm not sure how other aspects of service quality are in comparison (haven't played any online games recently). If your experience is anything to go by, BazNZ, then this could have been an abrupt and very recent drop in performance rather than the gradual decline that we often see. I haven't noticed it myself until now, although I do most of my downloading during off-peak periods. If any other Orcon customers want to chime in with peak hours speed tests, perhaps we can get Orcon's attention, if this indeed a systemic problem like we've seen before.

Thanks Ilmarin for your help and assistance...I've had problems since this cabinet was built back in November. Latency(lag) and Packet loss gaming on International Servers has been horrific ever since. Does this indicate Orcon does not have enough International Bandwidth to supply its customers ? To me it points in this direction and if so...I'll move to another ISP immediately to compare. All this time I thought it was an isolated fault at my end. I've also noticed lately when doing a speedtest at speedtest.net that the little green human figure places me in Wellington instead of Hamilton. Is Orcon routing us all through Wellington for some reason? When I do a speedtest to the Wellington Server it refuse's to start the upload test. The mind boggles lately at this Service we are paying for. I will now conduct some more tests too and get back to you all.

Actually, might I suggest doing an on-peak national speed test? I wasn't expecting this, but: Which is suggestive of backhaul (exchange -> Orcon) congestion... something I haven't personally experienced in a long time. It seems an odd coincidence that your exchange in Hamilton and my exchange in Auckland would both suddenly get hit with congestion like this, although I can't conclude that your exchange is congested without seeing a national speed test. If it is indeed backhaul congestion, then it may well be Telecom's fault (or should I say Chorus' fault)... and an Orcon LLU customer on the same exchange might be problem free.
