robjg63: Samsung seem to have firmware updates all the time for the 'smart' tvs.
What do you think the risks are?
The issue is that now they are more than a 'simple' tv - they have lots of software - you will potentially gets lots of software updates.

The issue is Firmware updates tend to nobble exploits that can be used to open up the set with 3rd party tools and apps that Samsung don't want you to have.

Example I also have a C650 with PVR mode enabled in the service menu. If I upgrade firmware on it I understand that the function will be lost without a lot of jiggery pokery to get it back.

Samsung are also quiet on what specific firmware updates fix / change.

I have the same set and for the moment it doesn't look like Samsung will be bringing TVNZ on Demand to the C Series sets which is a real shame. There has been an increase in VoD style applications for this model of late.

Yes the sonys system works quite well. But I think it is interesting how some manufacturers seem to be getting favoured over others. So if you buy a samsung you may get tvnz ondemand content, but if you buy another brand, you may get eg. media works content. I think there needs to be some regulation and openness on this for consumer benefit. Youtube for example seems to be on most devices these days.

Except virtually nothing will play on the youtube on the tv "not available on this device" from almost any music video etc.

Same thing seems to apply to the WD TV Live platform as well..

I just noticed TVNZ are advertising their ondemand as now playing on Samsung Smart TVs without being at all specific about any models.

Need to check the firmware version out. I haven't enabled the PVR mode on my set. Based on the Samsung site they don't currently support 2010 models

Online firmware updates for Samsung usually arrive about a week after they are posted on Samsung site.

Upgraded from 1014 to 1018. TVNZ on demand now working quality is ok. Firmware update has also tweaked tv settings. Much better blacks but need to re-calibrate my colours again!

anyone else have a ES 8000?

Yep, we have one. Haven't done this upgrade yet.

How do you go about your calibration?

Perhaps this is getting bit offtopic. Might be better to move to a thread in the Home Theatre section?

The app is now out for iPad. But it's not working for me :( Gets stuck on loading and then says "something went wrong, please try again".

Anyone manage to to use it? Thoughts?

Works okay on our iPad 2 running iOS 6.1 using Orcon Genius ADSL.

Been waiting for this since the Nov 2012 announcement.
