If I was to put a usb stick in the back of Tivo does it have to be fat32 format and will it play mp3, flv, avi?

no it wont work. Tivo is setup so it only works with their expander drive which then in practical terms makes the internal and external drives into 1 large drive.  You are right out of luck

The short answer is no - there is a TiVo desktop application that converts and publishes the files.

The home networking package will allow you play from network file shares though, which may achieve what you are looking for.

The home networking package is the only way to import other conent on. But you are probably best just to buy a USB media player to plug into the tv.
