latimers: @ELShah - Well that's what I thought too, but no joy.

In the end I bit the bullet (after Wimbledon was over) and sent it down to Hamilton. (They returned it pretty quickly.) A full bench test did not reveal any problems with the HDD or with the rest of the machine. They replaced the HDD just in case it was an intermittent fault. They also suggested adding a UHF bandpass filter to make sure that there weren't any extraneous signals getting through (e.g. from a nearby cell tower).

So far I haven't had any problems, but it's only been a couple of weeks. Time will tell, I guess.

One random thought I had was to wonder whether the freezing was due to the software having problems when the disk was full. After I watch a recording I delete it and it goes in the Trash. (I really like that feature.) In theory when the disk is full of stuff in the trash, it deletes the oldest stuff to make room. Perhaps that process doesn't work correctly but it will cause problems only after a long period of time then the Trash has had a chance to fill up. I started thinking about that because my son had a cell phone a while ago that was supposed to delete the oldest messages when the Inbox filled up. His phone started doing funny things but only after a long period of time after the repair people had had a go at it. We finally traced the cause of the fault but the phone manufacturer never did anything about it.

Hi

I was wondering how you got on with the problem of freezing you were having.  I ask because our unit has started doing this lately.  It's running 3.17 firmware with the 2lostkiwis patch and has been for some time without problems.  We've had the unit about 2 years but only lately has it been giving trouble.
Problem seemed to start with occasional looping after fast forward, that is, fast forward a few minutes then play. It starts playing, say 10 seconds then it jumps back to the point were play was pressed. Plays the same part again then jumps back again etc until play is pressed a second time.
Then I noticed it become very sluggish navigating menus, and recordings seem to contain an increasing number of glitches. Eventually I'll go to use it and find it has frozen.
So far I have each time it has frozen I have tried something different to fix it.  First few times just cycling the power, then fix and repair HDD, the last time emptying the trash.
Next I'm going to try but not necessarily in this order; factory reset, 3.18 firmware, 5.07 firmware, then returning it under the extended warranty I got talked into.

Cheers
Dave

PimpMyMagic: I'll have to have another look at this when I have some spare time.

I spent some time analysing the .tv files, but was overtaken by more urgent chores.

The first collection in the file has bytes indicating if the file is new, viewed or part viewed and I guess stores an index for the resume point. Also holds deleted indicator.

That's followed by the .TS file name which of course is made up of the record time (in GMT) and date and then 3 bytes for the channel number (after the underscore). The final digits are the segment section number.

Further on down the file you'll find the "info" description data.

While they're easily viewed with Hexedit, I suspect that the format is proprietary and so not easily parsed with any standard db prog.

Thanks for having a look.
I never used any program like HexEdit, so I made a program to read each character in the file and output the integer value.

Take a look at these files from the output of my little program:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/370431/1.txt
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/370431/2.txt

I have written in my thoughts, there are patches of seeming random characters and a lot of nothing. Some things seem to be in different places before as the random patches are sometimes slightly different lengths of happen in a different place.

If you can help make sense of this I would appreciate it. If it can be figured out I will spend some time to make an application that can assist modifying these files to save time in the future.

Yep, that's feely recent, as in all this year. Hasn't happened for me in a month maybe. I think it might be content related, as in particular recordings cause a memory leak or something.

I've always turned the mechanical power switch off at the back for a few seconds. Power it up and it's good again.

I've had one more crash while recording this year again too. I come home to find it frozen, with the recording indicator still on, and maybe only the first five minutes of the first program recorded.

Same fix as above.

Hi, has anyone had the problem of the magic tv flicking to live tv when another program starts recording.  It even does this when only one thing starts recording.  Isn't it record 2 things and pause live tv or is it just able to record one thing and pause live tv?  So if only one thing starts recording, the magic tv should still be able to play in non-live tv, chase playing (as in you had it paused).

So annoying when you have paused it and then chase playing and then it flicks to live TV and you are then not able to rewind at this point.

Also noticed it has done it once or twice when something has finished recording, at that point it flicks to live Tv (if it has been paused).

Thanks

Sounds like that's the way it's programmed. Some might call it a bug. Since I have that feature disabled I've not experienced it. That said, I can still freeze the live station. I could prolly test it just with that. That would be amusing for it to start showing live just because a recording had started up ...

How do you disable the feature?

Also I have experienced this looping glitch, but only on C4 channel, no other channel.

I always assumed the live tv flick was because of multi records on 2 different muxes , so it flicks to force you to watch one of the same muxes as one of the two recording channels is on.  Two tuners only so if you are recording something off TV1  and something off tv3 then you can only watch tv4 TV2 TV7 etc at the same time or a pre-recorded offering , opps sorry 7 i forgot :(  . Never had the flick happen any time other than the ramping up of 2 recordings myself

For the last month or so I've had problems with my MagicTV 3600 not recording some shows, in particular The Mentalist (TV2) and The Slap (TV3).  When I go to watch the recording the program name shows up as "No Signal" but the length shows correctly.  If I try to watch it I get a blank screen for a few seconds and then it returns to the Recorded Programmes list and the length of the recording has changed to 1 second.

Other shows record ok (South Park, Grimm, etc).

I'm on firmware 3.18NZ

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I had nothing but problems with firmware 3:18. I suggest reverting to 3.17. I have, and have had no problems since. 3.17 seems to be a lot more stable and more reliable...

Yeah, I had thought about that but now that I've got someone else saying it's buggy then I'll definitely do it.  Thanks!

Hi Murray , you need to check what is happening through the Magic TV unit - while it is recording (The ones that record no signal), first I would do a factory reset and a rescan - I have had this fault before - and a reset has fixed it - but you need to establish that it is not signal related ie by viewing the show when it is being recorded (one of the ones that shows no signal on playback)

Just a thought Murray still check what is happening through the Magic TV unit even if signal is always present on the TV directly

Thanks for the suggestions Bob.  Next time one of these shows is on I'll make sure it's viewable through the MagicTV.

I think that reverting back to 3.17 might help as I only started having these issues after I upgraded to 3.18 but I didn't connect the two events.

I had a chap that that was on an older version - and it only occurred after the DTT re-stacking , so I think the factory reset and a rescan fixed it for this chap
