nigelb999: At the moment I keep my MagicTV 3700 on all the time, but I'm now thinking about turning it off each night before I go to bed in order to save power and give the unit a rest (cool down period).

You may as well try the Energy Saving or All Off standby modes first.  The unit will be cool in these modes.

If I turn the unit off via the remote control before going to bed, will MagicTV automatically start up and record programmes that have been scheduled for the early hours of the morning (while the unit has been switched off)

Yes of course, regardless of the standby modes.

and is there any advantage in turning it off (i.e. less power consumption) given that it's in Fast Startup mode?

If you turn it off using the rear power switch, you need to turn it back on before scheduled recording can take place.  For a 3700, you should just try the different standby modes, whereas 3600 owners do not have a choice.

Since several users have reported automatic reboots of the MTV3600 right out of standby in the MTV3600 thread, I wonder if there is any MTV3700 user who has experienced automatic reboots right out of standby after Sept. 25, preceded by an on-screen message saying that the Magic TV will reboot itself?

I'm having problems trying to load the TV Guide from the MediaWorks channels (TV3 and TV4)? Pressing the TV Guide button doesn't do anything, however, the TV Guide loads fine from all of the other Freeview channels.

I've restarted the MTV (using the menu option) and even done a full power restart (turning it off and on at the back) but it still doesn't load on TV3 or TV4.

Does anyone know what might be causing this, and how to resolve it?

Yes I hadn't put it down to a particular channel, but have noticed I have to change channels sometimes to get the EPG to work, I just put it down to TV still having problems running the freeview and not a fault with the Magic.

I've verified firmware 5.10 works with the TV3 / FOUR stream I've got for Nov 6.

If the problem does not disappear in a day or two, please try auto scanning the channels or even a factory test.

Hi, does anyone know if there is a way to play ts files created by 3700 & 7000 models outside the box, on PC for example?  Cheers

I can only speak for the 3700 (which I have).

HD recordings from FreeView are stored in encrypted .ts files and I've yet to find a sucessful way to rip/play them. I believe this is a restriction of being a certified MyFreeViewHD PVR, though I'm aware that some older devices (like the 3600) don't seem to have this restriction in some/all(?) versions of their firmware.

SD recordings from FreeView are stored in non-encrypted .ts files.  I've been able to play these back with VLC and to convert them with Handbreak to more useful formats.

Hope that helps.

Later'ish
Craig

Correct.  There are Freeview limitation differences between them because they conform to the (different) latest Freeview requirements at their time of getting approved by Freeview.

MTV7000 is a Hong Kong-only PVR - it cannot receive New Zealand standard of terrestrial digital TV due to hardware differences.  If you import one from Hong Kong you'll find that its recordings from HDMI video input are encrypted.  Everything else is not encrypted (including Hong Kong Digital TV) so they can be played back on PC with suitable software and codecs.

after a faulty t1050 i bought a MTV3700 from JB hifi.  Surprised at how quick it was to set up and easy. Even 4 or 5 year old could set it up. Also I like no very bright red light shining in the eyes like the t1050 when turned off. Havent played with much yet but excellent picture on all channels and the channel change is quicker than t1050. appears to be very nice unit.  hopefully will be reliable. came with 5.07nz firmware which is latest showing on magictc website.

After a firmware upgrade, a factory reset is recommended (although not mandatory).  Already recorded programmes will not be affected but the bookings in To-Do List will be erased.

have looked and cant find on this thread about hard drive.  On my Dishtv T1050 which is back with dishtv, the 500GB HDD had 211 hours HD recording capacity.
The MTV3700TD with 1TB hard drive shows the same hours recording capacity.  Is this a false report or does it record larger files in HD than the dishtv in HD.
I am running 5.10NZ firmware and did factory reset.

Every channel has a different bit rate.  The only accurate free space unit is in GB (or MB).  The hour is derived by dividing the free space in GB by an estimating factor that is inherently inaccurate due to channel differences.  Magic TV uses a very conservative factor such that it's very unlikely to have surprises like the PVR reporting 3 hour free space but got a disk full after recording only 1 hour.
