We have a M2M device in QT, keeps on getting txt messages saying 'too many connections'. Also it has burnt thru 50meg in 4 days where as this normally takes a month. The message is pretty self explanatory but what does it actually mean. Just trying to sus out if it is a machine problem or 2degress as we have the identical setup elsewhere with no problems.

Sounds like the device is setting up more than one PDP context activation

If you can give me the exact text of the message I can tell you what it means. Off-hand I don't know of any 'too many connections' messages coming from our systems. Also, it's not possible to open multiple PDP contexts at the same time to the same APN - we just collapse them down to a single one.

I will have to go onsite and get back to you. Looking at the usage logs there is over 700 entries for 4 days where as other sites there is only a couple over a month. Either way the data does not add up to 50mb! if I PM the number would this help?

Ok, looks like this might have been a firmware issue. I came to this conclusion as I put a Vodafone sim in and it ate 16mb in about 6 hours. That would usually last for about a week and then it polished off 6 bucks in credit. Soooooo what does this mean. The difference between firmware was that one keeps the connection open while the broken firmware open and closed it for each connection. The problem is that both vodafone and 2degrees show usage of about .2mb yet have emptyed both prepays in a matter of hours. One could suggest there is an undocumented data fee for connecting.

If 16mb was used over a number of hours something is generating traffic,

Can you do a TCP dump on the connection?

There's no undocumented fee. The fee is quite documented. When you have a broadband pack the minimum usage is ~100KB.

1 megabyte = 1024 kilobytes
50 megabyte = 51200 Kilobytes

The minimum connection is 102.4K

51200 / 102.4 = 500

I got 700 odd connections but I guess the balance was what was left in the account.  The device now holds the connection open.

I still think your usage monitor should reflect this.

It does. The balances are committed to the database roughly every 1MB or at the end of the session if it was too short for a midsession commit. An online balance check will reflect that immediately (eg via USSD). Usage History records on the website are delayed because they only reflect CDRs, which are generated only at the end of the session.

So the online usage report will eventually show this?
