Hi,
I see that 2 degrees are gradually spreading their data network - good job guys!

I am going to visit my parents in Timaru around the end of the month and just wondered if there is any chance that 2 degrees has any mobile broadband running there. I know their coverage map doesnt show it - but I know sometimes they have things in test for a while before they announce it.

Anyone know?

Timaru isn't a MBB zone just yet but you will be able to use 3G data 2degrees in Timaru on our roaming network.

Cheers

I live in Timaru and sometimes I pick up a 2degrees EDGE signal on my Nexus S. I think they are in the very early stages of preparing it down here. You'll most likely be using Vodafone's horrible network down here. There is pretty much no signal in West Timaru (West of Morgans Road), as they only have towers downtown and near the main highway. I don't even get service in my house. If you depend on your phone and mobile data I would probably get a Telecom SIM while you're down here.

2Degrees can't come soon enough, Vodafone in Timaru is absolutely terrible. It's exciting to see some 2degree service showing up in Timaru, even though i cannot connect up yet. seems they've installed one site. Come on 2D!! we're eagerly waiting.

Image of it showing up on my iPhone in the Marchwiel area of Timaru. Seems they may have installed gear on the Voda Smithfield site on old north road. Pic was taken on Old North Road, 09/06/2012

Awesome! Sometimes my Nexus S connects to the network when its set to 2g only mode, and I get an EDGE data connection. I'm out near Mt Horrible. Can't wait for them to put up more towers!

When I was in Timaru central about 2 weeks ago I got great signal by Roaming on Vodafone. The 3G broadband was even faster then most places in Auckland where we're covered by 2Degrees signal!

Really? I find that hard to believe. I've never had great speeds with them. And they don't cover half of Timaru. They pretty much only have towers down highway one and one central one near Countdown on Church Street. Weak 2G signal/No signal any further West than the wai-iti/optipua roundabout.

Aw, was getting my hopes up for a second. Do you know if there are plans in place to improve coverage down here though?

Very strange! I was visiting a partner company which is located just off Stafford Street and was using 3G broadband at much faster speeds then I do down here in Auckland. Didn't really go much further outside Central Timaru so it could be quite different on the outskirts.

Funny that you should mention Morgans Rd - pretty much where I was at Queens Birthday weekend and the GSM reception (on Vodafone) was pretty poor - tried the 3G data and that seemed sadly non existant as well.
I guess the earlier posts explain it - only the CBD has cover...
