I ported a Vodafone number to 2 Degrees on Thursday last week. I had the conformation that the port was completed on Friday morning...

Upon receiving this, I tried registering for iMessage, this wouldn’t work.. So called 2 Degrees and was told they don’t support the iPhone, but this should work...

I was able to see that the iPhone was sending the registration message, but appeared the reply wasn’t get back to the phone.

Long story short, it turns out that SMS or calls from Vodafone, or international carriers, are still been delivered to the Vodafone network...

2 Degrees blame Vodafone, but after several phone calls, lots of dates and times been given that it will be resolved by, failed promises of someone calling me back, and a passing of 6 days later, we still have a half ported number..

So more a word of caution...  if you rely on your mobile, a port to 2 Degrees might not be the smartest move available to you.

I am happily using iMessage on my iphone on 2degrees.

The issue is not with 2degrees but with the international SMS carrier that apple is using to activate the iMessage account. Apple use the same SMS provider worldwide and do not directly interconnect with any carriers in NZ. When you ported your number to 2degrees all the local carriers such as Vodafone and Telecom direct traffic straight away to 2degrees. International providers either don't update their number portability databases for NZ very often or at all and this causes the issue that you are experiencing where the SMS is probably being delivered to Vodafone still. From memory there are issues with redirecting the SMS to 2degrees once this happens. This issue if anyones is with the Vodafone system.

I would guess that you can send and recieve SMS to any of the local carriers fine.

All outbound messages appear to be ok... But inbound from Vodafone doesn't work.

I guess my point isnt who is at fault, more I wouldn't of ported if we had been told Vodafone phones and international numbers won't be able to contact you for at least 6 days. And probably more frustrating is the lack of support from 2 Degrees.

Unfortunately that is correct. If incoming services from Vodafone are not arriving, then it is Vodafone's systems that are wrong. However if you PM me your number I will get in touch with Vodafone's porting team and get it sorted out.

2Degrees has better value overall. One reason I have to move back to Vodafone is because of international roaming!

Short term pain for long term gain, but well worth it in the end.

Thanks SaltyNZ - all is working now...  Awesome response time...  just still a little disappointed that I had to post on an internet forum to get a timely response to my issue...  but happy with the end result!

Thanks again

I'm having all sorts of problems since my port from Vodafone to 2degrees.
Ported my number on Friday - received confirmation txt a few hours later that all was ok.

I'm using an iPhone 4s and have updated all the carrier settings correctly.

Some of my SMS outgoing messages are going missing, others are being received from my 021 ported number, and others still are being received from my 2degrees 022 number (which shouldn't even be active?).

I'm using iMessage and standard SMS. The weird thing is some are working and some are not - often minutes apart.

The fact that my some of my SMS are being received as 022 numbers really puzzles me though...

Any suggestions?

There is not much difference to the NZ porting platform from others in the world, You get issues with any system porting or not,

John

So the porting systems overseas cause sms to go missing if it has been routed to the wrong network? It was my understanding that other countries had a fall back in place.

Each case of a SMS going a stray would need to be looked at before end to end or I am guessing

I ported my number over to 2Degrees from Vodafone as changing my number after so many years was not an option. Three weeks later I'm still not convinced I shouldn't go back. Yes, the extra data is very nice but only if you can use it.

SMS messages disappear into the ether, some arrive at their destination half a day later, but the big bugbear is that I haven't had one message from Google. I use Google Calendar extensively & its no use to me if I don't get reminders. Recently, I had to reset my phone while away from home. With 2-step authentication in place I was unable to get my Android back working because I didn't receive the SMS from Google with the code I needed.

Where I live, in Palmerston North, I pass in and out of the zone just by driving in my neighbourhood. I don't understand why (since I only use national data) but I lose data access regularly when on the move.

Almost at final straw time, I went to Australia a week after moving to 2Degrees. No service at all on arrival. I wasn't impressed at having to juggle phone & luggage on the airport train while changing SIM cards over just so I could let people know what time they needed to get to the station to pick me up. Back at Auckland airport, 2D SIM in place, I had no service. It took an hour before the phone registered that there was service but the SMS messages I sent to the people picking me up (to their Vodafone number), to tell them the plane was in early & where I was waiting said, "sent" but didn't go through.
5 hours later, I received the SMS messages from them telling me where they were waiting for me in the carpark. It was a damned cold night and two hours hanging around outside the airport trying to find each other wasn't fun.

Now, I don't blame 2Degrees for this (well, apart from roaming not working and the no access in Auckland anyway) because I knew porting would create *some* issues with SMS but, really, having 1G data on a monthly plan isn't much use if data drops out most of the time you want to use it.

So, long post nearly over, my advice is - look carefully at whether porting issues would have a major impact on how you use your phone or not, check coverage in your area (in Palmerston North it sure isn't good enough data coverage), and look at whether you really need to keep the same number. In hindsight (aint it grand) I should have left my number active on Vodafone, changed to prepay, with a voice message telling everyone to call a new 2Degrees number. I don't recommend porting your number over.
