Hi Guys ,
Im trying to help a friend out who is having problems with sending email from there Samsung S2 GT-19100 phone here are the details ...

Mobile supplier is 2 degrees
Email Client is Telstraclear { email addy is ....@clear.net.nz}
She is using the inbuilt app social hub I think it is that came with the phone for her email

We can receive emails no problems to the phone but it wont send emails .I have tried K9 mail as well and that too has the same problem , I have been told this is a problem with telstraclear to do with sending emails from your phone is this correct ?

Any help would be great .

Cheers

Are you trying to send using TCL's mail server?

If that's the case, I'm not sure you can send mail from outside their network and iirc they don't do authentication outside their network.

Why aren't you just using gmail?

Ok, first I stand corrected...  tcl does accept email from outside the network if you set up authentication, but it doesn't use TLS/SSL (so turn those options off if you're using them).

However, I use gmail all the time to send from my normal email address.  I just set up the alternative email address in GMAIL so I can send as don@mydomain.co.nz from my phone.

thanks Don For your help I tried turning all authentication off and on and still no joy ,interesting way of doing it via G Mail Im still of the opinion we shouldnt have to set it up via Gmail ... Im with snap and dont have a problem sending from my private email address via K9 Mail .... TCL just make it hard ...lol , I have ruled out it being a handset issue as I tried to set the account up on my phone HTC one X and it could receive but not send so must be TCL related.

cheers

TCL do auth, but not with TLS/SSL, so if you've turned the auth on you'll need to ensure that it's plain text auth.

But yes, gmail makes far more sense and you end up with your mail backed up.

Thanks Don it did make for interesting reading ... it be tricky to set up now so this is why Im persisting with trying to find out why it wont work with TCL .nothing is ever easy ...lol.we are lothed to ring TCL as the wait time alone is enough to put anyone off let alone not getting a local ,one reason why I switched ISP's Snap are local {Chch} and you speak to locals when you ring them ...hahah thanks again .

I just sent you a pm, but a thought, have you tried via wifi? Are you sure that 2Deg isn't blocking smtp over port 25 from exiting their network?

I use this method to send email through a 2 degrees phone for a main vodafone.net.nz email account so I assume it would probably work for TCL. 2degrees have an outgoing email server  I have taken the following settings from their website.2degrees Email settings (outgoing)Outgoing server: smtp.2degreesmobile.net.nz
Outgoing port: 25 (without SSL)

If you use the 2 degrees SMTP server for outgoing no ID or password required and the standard TCL POP  adress for incoming email then you should have no problems. Just make sure the return path email address's is correct.

Hope this helps

Laurie

If you use 2degrees smtp server than expect most of what you send to end up in the spam folders, since many spam filters will look at the dns records even in the absence of a properly formed spf record (which telstraclear appear to lack) as an indication that an email is being spoofed.

If telstraclear wont provide you with a working non port 25 TLS/SSL mail server, then I think that it is clear that it is time to move on from them as they are not serious about providing email.

IMO it is irresponsible for an ISP to accept SMTP auth over cleartext from outside their network.
