So about 8 months ago I called up and arranged 2 degrees business sale rep to come and show me what they can offer me and signed up to a Pay Monthly plan. About a month later I ported away for un-related matters. Now out of the blue today I get a call from the Guy who sold me my phone plan saying he no longer works for 2 degrees but now he is a life / health insurance dealer and tried selling me a policy. Has anyone else around Hawkes Bay had this? I assume he's just made a copy of clients when he left and now he's trying to make money of his existing database? Or is 2Degrees now in the insurance game :P Professional IT Solutions at an Affordable Price.

If it was something related you probably would not mind in practice but this is basically spam and probably breaches the privacy act. 2Degrees will be interested to hear about this one and will probably act quickly.

Hmmmm, I'm not sure if there's an integrity issue here or not. It looks like the guy made it clear he wasn't with 2 degrees anymore so he was being up front about who he works for. The other issue is who owns the database he is working with. Some salespeople develop and hold onto their own database when they leave an employer, very often the "ownership" depends on the way they were employed, were they a contractor/self employed sales person of a bona fide employee. As above ^ This is unrelated to 2Degrees and I don't see any issue at all. It is similar to salespeople making random calls to your phone.

From what the OP said, he is using contact details owned/used by his former company, which I presume they own. Also it is a privacy concern, as you don't know what information they have got. I would contact 2 degrees about it.

The way I see it is I only ever gave my details to two degrees (On their contract) an no one else. It doesn't worry me (Being honest I wouldn't have had a clue who he was if he didn't mention it), I was just more interested to hear if other people had been in the same boat. The guy probably had a restraint of trade clause in his contract to stop him using his 2 degrees database for x amount of months after he left, however this usually only applies if your new job is in the same field (direct competition) If the guy amassed his own database on the side while working at 2 degrees and now uses it for his own gain in another field then there is not much anyone can do I would have thought. You don't say if your phone number is published or otherwise available publicly? If you happily give your number out to shops, websites, business contacts, or whoever, or it's listed in publicly available directories, then I don't think you have an argument. Just politely say no, end of problem ...first world problem/sigh Artificial intelligence is no match, for natural stupidity!

Although it may seem a bit dodgy...the largest database of potential clients is [still] delivered to your front door each year in the form of the White Pages, and of course they can just do the traditional door-to-door leg work. Pretty hard to hide from those cold calls and door knockers (unlisted number and a large dog certainly help) Matt East

If you had ticked the box to say 2D can use your data and share it with a 3rd party for various promotional stuff then you have no issue (although 2D miught have an issue with an ex staff member taking customer details with him.) If you had not allowed 2D to share your data then they (and this guy) could be in breach of privacy and anti-spam laws I would say.
