2DegreesCare: Hi Reven, yep, as said before we can't transfer the balance from one SIM to another.  Glad you got the password sorted on the MicroSIM.

This is what we advise if you haven't got a 2degrees SIM.  By a $5 SIM activate it and set up your details in 'Your 2degrees' then call us on 0800 022022 and ask for a free blank MicroSIM which we'll send onto you.  When you get it, call us back and we'll swap your number and credit over to the MicroSIM.
^POB

is a little annoying, i wasnt told at dse about the microsim password or anything, i said i was buying it for my ipad (even bought a ipad case at the same time).  but i only spent $10 on the $20 sim from warehouse stationary that will go to waste so not worried (using vodafone would have cost me more than that anyway).

a iphone/ipad app will probably solve all these issues, i really hope 2d make one.  really put you ahead in geek points (i prefer national bank because of their iphone app, asb website is really annoying)

You should just spend the $20 on 1GB data and then cut the SIM down and use in your iPad until you've used it all up and then move onto your microSIM. That's what I did, bought a few $20 SIMs from Warehouse Stationary for $10 each and will use each one until they're empty then pop a new one in. Yup, more hassle than just using a microSIM but I have a SIM cutter anyway so may as well use it and getting 1GB for $10 is a bargain :-D

I have my iPad with an activated 2 degrees microsim. I have the data bought.  Is there anything more I need to do to ensure the iPad is using the purchased data?

Cheers.

Just check your balance at Your 2degrees, which is free.

Do I need to do anything with the APN settings?  i.e. follow the setup guide on 2 degress describing the iPhone config?

And thanks for the previous prompt reply.

Cheers.

No, not if it's already activated and you've registered your details on Your 2degrees, just go to the site at www.2degreesmobile.co.nz and click on the Your 2degrees button on the top right. (There is a problem with the site at the present moment, no ETA as yet but should be fixed soon).
Cheers

Cool. Thanks. I've got it all registered before the site problem. And I have seen the data bundle applied and the data usage start to tick down. All good and painless. :-)

SSaltyNZ: Well, you use the text service - send "buy 512mb" to 233, for example to buy the 512MB/1GB bundle.

Before I start I just want to say that this isn't a gripe, it's just letting you know how my first day trying to get data on my iPad with 2degrees went. In fact I am all up and running on my iPad, using 2degrees to type this.

First I went down to dick smith and bought a $20 sim card. All well and good, although the guy told me it would work on my iPad. That's cool, he probably gets told to say that. I load it in, send off a text and through every fault of my own misunderstanding the OP I send "buy 1GB". I merrily use $20 in about 5 minutes.

All good, my own silly fault. I buy another top up, throw my sim in my phone and load it. For reasons unbeknownst to myself and therefor to all of you, I then throw it back in the iPad and try to request the bundle again. I double check it's all good "buy 512mb" to 233 then proceed to go to the 2degrees website to make an account.

Idiot. Of course the activation password gets sent via text. Take the sim out and put it back in my phone and call customer service. 'hi, I just signed up for you data bundle and tried to log in to the website and need to reset my password, or something along those lines. 'umm you aren't on a data bundle'

What? I double checked. The friendly guy offered to send me the text and I could forward it to 233. Ok, sure. Now I'm on a palm treo pro. To do this I need to unlock the touch screen. Yup all done I say as I put it up to my ear and promptly cut him off as my big lobe touches the comms manager icon.

Great. Call them back. The next guy says, yeah I can see you just tried to get the data bundle but it won't work cos you only have $19.44 on your account. Of course, this is because I tried to sign up to my 2degrees thinking the data bundle was on there when it wasn't which I explain. He says he will get a manager to call me - not that I even requested that - as soon as possible to try and sort it out. Ok I wearily say.

Damn it! Forgot to get him so reset my password!

After an hour I need to check my email, well really I needed to a while ago but didn't want to use any more data, and didn't want to take my sim sim out of the phone, I flagged waiting for a manager, bought another topup, activated topup and data bundle with my phone, called back customer serviced, the girl reset my password with a text to my phone, put sim in iPad, logged in and all sweet.

As I said, this isn't a gripe or a moan. I'm just letting people know, that if you can, you are better off putting your sim in your phone to do this stuff as the iPad won't receive any confirmations or errors. I can't fault the 2degrees customer service either. All three of them were grate, lovely to deal with and genuinely seemed to want to help. My problems tonight have been a combination of my own ineptitude and naivety.

The irony is that I got this sim so that I didn't have to keep swapping out my telecom sim (which I have 2GB on, and that's plenty) between my phone and my iPad. This has been a very expensive start to my 2degrees experience and I now have credit on my sim that I will never use as I will only ever buy things in bundles. Oh well.

Also, I want to cry because this is the second time I have had to type this as the first time I got locked out of GZ and couldn't go back. Must be my day

Ouch.. sounds like one long day for you.. If you PM me the iPad's SIM number or phone number I'll have a look and see if there's anything I can do to help.

my problem i have with ipad + 2d (and it would be any network), i bought a 50mb data pack (im always around wifi), my wifi must have died at some point without me knowing (a little icon you dont really look at), i was downloading a few comics, and i used up all my 50mb, and then it went to standard rates, and i used my whole $20 credit without knowing. i went to use the internet out and about, and sorry you have no credit.

there needs to be a way of tell ipad users their data is running out, an ipad app, or heck even email, or txt to another number. just some way! now i need to buy more credit, but dont want to put to much on my sim (really i should only use about 30-100mb a month) unless this happens again.

Cant you just turn cellular data off in settings? I just turn mine on when i want to use it, and turn it off again when i hit wifi or have finished using it. Or am i missing something?

I totally agree, an iPone/iPad app for purchasing add ons and checking your account would be great and I hope 2degrees are well into the process of developing it. In the meantime I use Consume app (and will continue to use it even if 2degrees brings out an app), it's really useful and a great way to keep an eye on your data usage for your iPad but also works with lots of other things too. It should help you getting caught out like you have been. It won't help using your data if you've lost your wifi at home though.

Not only is that a simple solution but also one I use myself so cannot think why I didn't say it also! Definitely the best way to stop unwanted cellular data usage.

I find that without turning cellular data off my iPad (and iPhone) still uses cellular data when in sleep to check email. It doesn't seem to use much, maybe it's just the push notifications and then if there's an email waiting it wakes up wifi but it's definitely using some during the night etc

I honestly didn't even think about that :). Thanks for the tip, also going to try out that app.

These are just temp solutions though. There still needs to be so communication from 2d/vf/telecom about data usage. Whoever comes out with the app first will get a bunch of ppl switching. I really hope 2d are first
