We are increasing testing three-fold and need more Snap customer volunteers. Help us to improve New Zealand broadband performance by volunteering to host one of our probes. The probe is a bridged router with an 802.11n wifi on board that we encourage you to enable through our website. Volunteers are needed in Auckland, Hamilton and Dunedin as well as many smaller centres, I'll update here when that changes. Hi John, I'm interested in this. I've voluntered and said 3Gb is fine. How much do you actually need to get good results?

How much do you actually need to get good results? 1GB is fine for our standard analyses, but we do specials on the 3GB groups now and again, but tend not to get anywhere near the 3GB yet. Hi, I'm setup with a Snap connection in Dunedin but I have a question regarding whether a TrueNet Probe would work with my network setup. I have a DrayTek Modem in full bridge mode connected to a Linksys router running Tomato Firmware which handles the connection and DHCP. Most devices are connected to this router wirelessly. Now, in this case I'm not sure that putting the TrueNet device between my modem and router would work as the modem is in full bridge and doesn't have DHCP on. Putting the TrueNet Probe attached to an ethernet port on my router would presumably require me to run all wireless connections through the probe (so it can detect when the network isn't being utilised) and this would remove the some of the control my custom tomato install gives me. So the question is whether it is detrimental to attach the probe standalone to my existing setup without connecting any of my devices through it (presumably negating the ability to detect when the network is in use?), whether there is another setup I have overlooked or whether it will actually work setup between my modem and router as is? Cheers, Andy Hi Andy, I just plug my probes WAN port into a LAN port on my network. ( It's just a dumb node currently ) It basically acts as a switch more so than a router and you can plug other devices into the LAN ports of the truenet box and it will work fine.

Yes it will still work normally, Mine just sits there and looks pretty with power / wan light on and that's all.

While it will work this way and return results, it has two problems: It will not be able to see your traffic, so may test during your use and compete for capacity, This may affect you and your results, by slowing either or both. The probe checks for traffic before and during tests and either pauses or waits before testing. Try connecting some, or eventually all, devices to it to see if they are enabled - usually most devices have no problem. www.truenet.co.nz We are seeking more volunteers here :-)
