Lally: In the same boat as you Ronnie, was getting around the same on ADSL as you.

My spectrum looks fairly similar to yours however I'm syncing less than you currently on my VDSL connection.
Still yet to get a sparky around to run cable directly from the ETP to where I want the gear set up.
I'm hoping it is the wiring that will improve my sync speeds.
How old is the subdivision you are living in, my one is around 5 years old so surely the copper wouldn't be so substandard?

I would still run temp cable from ETP to modem.. before getting sparky around.. that will tell you if its a wiring issue or not..

Even bypass the ETP master filter

yeah I might try cleaning up the wiring of the ETP a bit.  Quick question, if I'm using snap plus (so nothing is plugged into the old phone jacks in my house), do I even need the VDSL master splitter? Would it be much different without the splitter, and with the old phone jacks completely disconnected from the ETP?

technically, no. chorus often get funny about it..

i have one installed in my ETP (took many attempts to actually get it there), chorus tech hasnt wired up the POTS phoneline at all, he didnt want to risk me having him back out to fix more stuff.

end of the day, i have a clean cat5 to my jack, with a splitter in the ETP, and chorus are happy.

Absolutely no need to have it and it's not going to help.  I'd take it out of the loop personally!

With DLM, does it matter if I say disconnect my PPPOE bridge? or does it monitor only the sync speeds?

Case and point, I'm doing some testing between DDWRT and OpenWRT, which means I need to flash OpenWRT and DDWRT regularly, at which point it establishes a new PPPOE connection, but my modem stays untouched.

This is a signature.

I don't think PPPoE changes would affect DLM as PPPoE traffic is at a different network layer and basically considered as 'Internet traffic' I'd say.

Well I did the upgrade to 6.01 and all good so far. I got a sync increase from ~43 Mbit/s to 45.4 Mbit/s which might be related or not. Still on DLM-1. So far so good...

Seems like some handy new features particularly with VPN support.

Some admin pages have a bit of German language which has yet to be translated.

I will see how this goes....

LOL, a true sign of stringent QA processes!

that much  of a sync change, is well within margin of error in resyncs for vdsl really.. not due to the the 6.0 upgrade at all ild put money on it.

i suspect the 6.0 OS is the same as 5.5.. longer lines are ok, but short lines take a massive shot to the rates.

wow, when this was given to me as a beta firmware to try, there was warning about the german pages, with indication its only because its the beta firmware.. but that was meant to be all sorted before the release..

AVM really seem to have dropped the ball on their recent firmwares.. getting worse and worse trying to squeeze all the features in.

Yup, that should be easy to do yourself - as you say just cut the incoming pair to the filter and scotchlok it directly to the pair that currently runs to the modem.

I suspect it won't make a huge difference though - I did something the exact same thing when I first got VDSL and it made very little difference to sync speeds and I don't think errors changed much either.   It has run flawlessly since though, with very low errors, plenty of room for SNR tweaking :) I never really tried SNR tweaking before doing it so not sure how much difference it made there.

I wouldn't bother replacing cat5 with cat6 - I don't think it'll make much difference for this. How long is the cable from street to etp though and then from etp to VDSL jackpoint?

so, interesting read of the day, got a response to a 17a..

BMarquis:

We have a number of conditions that must be met for your line to be switched to a 17a Spectrum profile.
If your line is on the 17a spectrum profile, but the spectrum between 8Mhz and 17Mhz is not being used, I'd be looking at your CPE. it shouldn't report 17a unless the DSLAM is providing that, and we run 8b and 17a on independant profiles.

As for the question of 'what allows a line to be on 17a':
The current bandplan is 8b (goes without saying!)
The line is shorter than 350 meters, which is an electrical length in the 5530 Network Analyser of <7dB
DLM is in operation on that line
A Bandplan switch hasn't occured in the last 90 days (to stop bouncing between 8b+17a, while still allowing re-evaluation as/when required)

Hopefully this helps answer some questions?
