Well, that's a bit better.  On -5db now:

CRCs sitting around 1.7 after an hour or so which is well acceptable.  Hopefully it stays down that low!

Speed is still pretty sweet as well:

By road - about 300m. Hard to say how long the copper is, but my attenuation (10db - same as yours) suggests it's around 6-700m - which I find hard to believe. In reality it's probably somewhere between those 2 figures.

Hmm okay, well how much does a new line drop and masterfilter generally help? I'm probably going to get one anyway as I think there might be some bad wiring in the house.

I'd say it would help significantly, especially with bad wiring!! However, since you probably don't want to spend too much at this point if you're about to go fibre, simply disconnecting the unused phone jacks would probably give you a pretty good speed boost.

Nah we are ages out from fibre from what I know... We are in the 'fibre' zone, but no knowen time for when it's actually going to be laid. Believe me, if fibre was only something like 4-6 months off then I'd deal with what I've got disconnect the current ports and just run with it, until I got fibre :P

Ah right, I'd go the full monty then; but if you're going naked (lol, naked, full monty - get it! :D) then a splitter is a waste of time as it's designed for use with clothed lines, just get a new twisted pair cable run from the demark to your DSL jack (or direct to the router!).

+1. I had a master filter from ADSL days but removed it for VDSL - I just found where the incoming line enters the house (my house has no ETP - fortunately it enters the house in a cupboard under our stairs) cut a small hole in the gib, pulled the line out there, cut it and scotchlocked the appropriate pair of half a short ethernet cable directly to that. Other end now plugs direct into the fritzbox, which just lives in said cupboard. I thought about putting in a proper jackpoint, but since it's in a cupboard I haven't bothered yet. Seems to work pretty well so have left it as is.

How much could this cost then? Would CoffeeBaron be able to do it or would he only be able to do the inside from the demarc?

I imagine that Chorus / Telecom would have to run a new cable from the street to the demark (if you wanted to get that re-run), but CoffeeBaron would be able to do the other work I imagine (assuming you live somewhere that he covers). I'd get the internal work done first, then see what the results are and go from there.

Right, first post updated with SNRM tweaking info plus a few other misc updates.

That pretty much completes all the info I wanted to put in it now! The only thing missing is determining what the maximum acceptable DLM-1 CRCPM rate is, but I have a line into a contact who is trying to find this out for me. I've also removed the 'telnet' section (not that there was much of one), as I haven't had any reason to use it to do anything yet. If I ever do, I'll add that in.

Has anyone had trouble with the TG789vn locking up? I've just tried to use one previously used in bridging mode as a normal router and after about 5 minutes it locks up, lights all solid etc. When the wireless is enabled this is more like 2 mins.

I'm using 8.4.2q firmware and can't seem to download new ones from the technicolour website. I have emailed connectplay where I bought it from. I'm hoping its firmware related but maybe the unit is faulty?

Well, 24hrs with the -5db tweak and things are looking pretty stable with a CRCPM of 1.78:

Pretty happy with that!  I think I've found my optimal SNRM tweak level!
