Today my Snap connection switched to VDSL2. I changed the account settings on my Fritz!Box and it happily reconnected. So far the stats look reasonable: But when I run a speedtest, I getting much lower upload speeds: Same story regardless of server. Anyone got any idea what's going on here? Why is my speedtest upload so much lower than the upload throughput the Fritz!Box is reporting?

what where you on before ADSL what where you upload speeds. I think you will find you might be on the limit for vdsl and hence your upload speeds show this

Did you request a full install with wiring? Do you have a master filter or have you simply plugged your VDSL into an existing jackpoint? Looks like a possible wiring issue causing high attenuation for the upstream. *Need help configuring your Linksys ATA or IP Phones for New Zealand? Check my blog post

4db is pretty sweet, so no major line issues on that front! Also, errors are low too, sounds more like some kind of rate limiting issue to me...

Hi Steve, Something does look a bit fishy especially with the Fritz seeing the attainable as only 2mbit. Oddly enough the ISAM port shows the attainable as 14mbit. I do agree I think it looks like a logical issue more so than a physical one. I've started up a 2hr line test on your line to see if I can get some more data on it. If you could chuck through some more speedtests over that period I'll try see what's causing it to cap out. Thanks Nick, I didn't see your reply until now, so there probably wasn't a lot of traffic during the line test, sorry. Speedtest is still showing the same now. I was previously on ADSL, the current throughput yesterday morning before the change over was 17048 down 1272 up with attenuation 0db down and 2db up. Speedtest to Wellington was 14.64/0.99. What is the difference between current and attainable throughput? I thought current throughput was the actual sync speed and attainable was the maximum the line could manage. It seems odd that current is higher than attainable. I don't have a master filter. The modem is plugged into an existing jack, the second of two on the line. There is nothing plugged into the other jack. If it was a wiring issue wouldn't the download speeds be lower and downstream attenuation higher? And if there was a wiring problem I'd still expect to see some increase in upload speeds over ADSL, right?

Hi Steve, I just checked the results, They show that everything looks pretty good overall however there is a bit of variation on the downstream noise margin by 1-2db. Oddly enough it showed next to no traffic going over your line during the 2 hour period. If you could do a few of those speedtests to different places in NZ, flick them through to support@snap.et.nz and I'll get a fault underway to check if there is anything causing it to limit out at 1mbit upstream. I don't think it will be a wiring issue as the downstream looks to be normal. FWIW, I (and others) have seen low (1-2mbit) attainable send speeds while the 'current' send speed has been fine (~10mbit) and actual throughput is as expected (~10mbit).

Hey Steve, Shot in the dark, Can you check on your Fritz under Internet > Account Information down the bottom there should be connection settings area with a speed rate limit. If this is set to auto detect put it on manual and just 100000 / 100000 then apply and re test. Feel free to set these to what you want afterwards but would be good to open them right up to see if that's the issue. Thanks Nick, looks like that was the problem! Those speed limits aren't on the account information tab when the connection is set to DSL, but I did remember seeing them before so I had a bit of hunt around and found that if I set the connection type to "external modem or router" then they showed up. The download limit with 15000 so that didn't seem to be enforced but the upload limit of 1024 looks like it was. With them both set to 100000 things are looking very good: Thanks, Steve

Excellent that's much more like what I would expect to be seeing on your line. My Fritz is used as a WAN router more so than a VDSL modem so those settings might have been in a slightly different place. Thought I'd mention that DLM has changed my line configuration a couple of times since my last post. I started with 8ms latency and 2.0 impulse noise protection. First it dropped INP to 0.0 which resulted in a 44mbps sync and now it has also dropped the latency to 1ms. Current sync speed is 47968 down and 10360 up. Speedtest looking good:
