A 100mbps connection could potentially download around 30,000GB a month, yet the entry level caps on these are a fraction of that, and the addon data packs are still so expensive that to use even 1/10th of what the connection is capable of per month would increase the monthly cost to over $500. Utterly ridiculous. This is the bit I dont get, where do I shove this 30Tbytes of data, I cannot afford the disc space to hold it all, or thats roughly 34days of continual 24/7 streaming at 10Mb/s, so when do I get time to go out and play? In an ideal world we'd consume all our "TV" and movie consumption via streaming HD, and between 7 of us I'd estimate our potential viewing time would be in the order of 1000 hours per month if everyone could watch their own programs on a PC without fighting over the TV's.. 1000 hours times ~2.25gb/hour for a 1080 stream = ~2.2TB in "tv" viewing, let alone gaming, youtube, web surfing, and maybe the odd linux ISO..

Really? even assuming you never watch anything together (pretty anti-social household) that is still 5 hours of streaming TV per day, every day for every member of your household. Assuming you actually have jobs that is pretty much all the free time you have taken up watching TV. To demand that ISPs cater for freakish use customers like you (lets face it, I doubt there are more than a few households in the world who use more than 3TB of data per month) is quite honestly ridiculous. It would be like arguing power companies should provide unlimited power for a flat fee because some people like to run particle accelerators in their basement

I agree with you mate, but not many here will. I attempted to argue this point when Orcon released their plans, but was rubbished on Geekzone. I was expecting a paradigm shift in data caps to go with the paradigm shift in speeds, and was disappointed to find that this apparently wasn't going to be the case. However, it seems that most people are happy to see data caps stay largely the same, and plan to essentially do exactly what they already do with the internet - only faster. Basically I was hoping that the ultra-high speeds of UFB would enable some new consumption patterns over what we have with ADSL now. It's simply not going to happen with such low data allowances. We moan that Netflix doesn't offer their streaming service here. Why would Netflix - or any company like Netflix - even bother when 99% of their potential customers have a 30GB or 50GB data cap? I want to get UFB so I can throw out my DVD drives and move to 1080p movie/tv streaming and more online game purchasing (new games can regularly top 20GB now). I want to throw out my power-hog fileserver and just download stuff when I need it. I especially want to use the vastly better upload speeds to actually make use of "cloud" services like Google Music and host my own content-streaming servers for when I'm away from home. That's what I thought UFB was going to be all about. Maybe my expectations were too high. I guess I can browse Trademe faster at least... Back on topic, the plans look okay I guess. Despite my whinging, the overage is actually petty reasonable relative to the competition. But Snap were already the best in this regard. I understand why there's a minimum 12 month term (it's expensive to connect new customers, and you don't want to be left out of pocket when they leave after a month) but there's just no way I'm going to sign a contract that long before the rest of the players have even announced their plans.

Just a quick point on the contracts, has any one noticed that it is cheaper to take the 24 month contract and quit after 12 months than take the 12 month contract. It will save you nearly $200 .

If you take all 11 SD(QPSK) muxs and 3 HD(8PSK) muxs thats a total post FEC data rate of 430Mb/s, actual data for video is a bit less than that. Also take into account that bit rates of Sky is way higher than what you will find streamed on the internet. Cyril

I really think the government has dropped the ball with UFB, they should have written the specs/contracts in such a way that data caps were a thing of the past, a relic of the dark ages of bad internets in NZ. Instead we continue to see ISP's bringing out offerings with pathetically low data caps to maximise their profits instead of providing NZ with world class access. I could not more wholeheartedly disagree more. I think data in NZ is very reasonable and your expectations are unreasonable. ISP's still need to make money and margins in ISP land are pretty slim. They rely on volume and let's be honest UFB hardly has the volume at this point. It's also very early days for super fast connections in New Zealand. You forget our main source of international bandwidth is the southern cross cable which had a MASSIVE upfront cost which I believe is STILL being recovered. There is a second link due to go live in 2014 which MAY bring down the cost of international data somewhat, but realize we are a tiny island in the middle of no-where and so the vast majority of data accessible to us comes from the other side of the world.

You can do this just once, or repeat this process as many times as you want over the month. Cheers! ^RO Was already a good deal on ADSL and will be a GREAT deal on UFB with those massive speeds! You could theoretically do 80GB per night at 30mbps, or 270GB per night at 100mbps :) You'd want to make sure the times on your scheduler were set accurately, though... you'd blow your entirely monthly cap in just 66 minutes if for some reason your downloads didn't stop in time. Could make daylight savings switchovers a bit nerve-wracking

People who think NZ pricing is expensive need to look at the US - you'll soon realise many of the UFB plans such as these from 100Mbps ones from Snap! with the 750GB addon are actually a lot cheaper than people in the US would get. Remember that for many large US ISP's "unlimited" really means 250GB per month, and an average customer's usage is only around 20 - 30GB per month (plus or minus a few GB depending on who's stats you look at), and NZ's average use is around 10GB to 15GB, once again depending on who's stats you want to use. *Need help configuring your Linksys ATA or IP Phones for New Zealand? I think the majority forget what is like being in a flatting situation... in my flat last year I lived with 4 other boys and being "full time" students had plenty of spare time. We used Vodafone's Unlimited Naked DSL offering towards the end of the year and would easily hit 300+ GB a month. It's not hard when you consider every student seems to have either a xbox/ps3 or both, watches EVERYTHING online either streaming or downloading and a LOT of spare time even if they are doing a double degree triple major. I know students probably aren't the current target market for these companies but I don't think this same scenario is all that uncommon in a family household. I too was hoping for much larger data caps at a reasonable price, I love the idea that everyone in the household could potentially game and download at the same time (not possible without pulling out your hair on current ADSL technology), with wholesale data rates coming down year after year I don't think its unreasonable to offer consumer plans with data caps in the 100s rather than the 10s of GBs. A 300GB+ UFB plan for around the $100 mark would be great to see sometime soon (similar to current ADSL offerings), 30GB data cap is more like what our mobile data caps should be!
