The only thing that Snap could do different on a EUBA DSL connection would be to prioritise their own downstream traffic. You can't do much in the way of QoS in a CPE for downstream because you can't control the order of packets sent over the DSL connection, however it's common for ISP's offering VoIP services to perform some traffic prioritisation as the traffic leaves their network. *Need help configuring your Linksys ATA or IP Phones for New Zealand? The problem there is that ADSL circuits aren't fixed bandwidth. To my mind, the upstream is way more likely to get congested. But with slow (say < 4 megabit) connections downstream QoS could help. With 10 megabit+ ADSL there isn't really a lot of problem with downstream traffic creating enough congestion to degrade phone calls significantly. Generally speaking, there are fixed buffer sizes creating bufferbloat, on slower connections. Snap aren't even offering VOIP on ADSL connections atm AFAIK.

I've been using Snap VoIP in its various development and test phases for over 3 years now, have also been using a UK sip service for the same period and I have had no issues with using ADSL1, ADSL2, VDSL or TCL Cable (wholesaled through Snap) QoS has not been setup on any of these services.

Hmmm. had an email from Snap! on Thursday that due the the high volumes of install the earliest site visit for me is 5th Oct! Guess I've no chocie but to wait. They did ship the FRITZ!Box 7304 to me in the meantime. Now, out of interest, I went visited Snap! home page again, and noticed that the Lightwave 30 plan is now $119 per month< and for signing up to 24 month contract you only get the FRITZ!Box 7340 router free (no more 145GB data pack for the first 12 months!)... They were pretty quick to adjust their prices!

Hmmm. had an email from Snap! on Thursday that due the the high volumes of install the earliest site visit for me is 5th Oct! Guess I've no chocie but to wait. They did ship the FRITZ!Box 7304 to me in the meantime. Now, out of interest, I went visited Snap! home page again, and noticed that the Lightwave 30 plan is now $119 per month< and for signing up to 24 month contract you only get the FRITZ!Box 7340 router free (no more 145GB data pack for the first 12 months!)... They were pretty quick to adjust their prices! Are you sure about those prices? I think you are looking at their @ Work plans. Just checked now, Lightwave 30 (Home) is still $75 with the free 145GB extra. However their work plan is $119 for Lightwave 30 with no extra data.

Don't lose faith yet - I signed up with Snap for UFB about 10 days ago and asked for a 20th of August UFB install - seemed all OK until they came back with September 28 as an install date from Chorus (ouch!). Decided to go for it anyway and just wait patiently. A few days later got another note from Snap saying they'd got some new dates out of Chorus - UFB now on the 24th of August :) Very happy camper now - only 8 days to go rubs hands

I have been a Snap UFB fibre triallist for the last month, going pretty well so far As part of the T&C of the trial period, there was a particular non-disclosure clause for sharing any info without the express consent of either Snap or their wholesale provider (Enable in my area) They've granted permission to share some results of speedtests - but no pics of CPE/ONT/installation, so don't ask... I've run a number of speedtests, and typical results are 5ms ping, 29Mbps down, 9.1Mbps up. Worst ping I've ever seen was 6ms, best I've ever seen is 0ms? (think that might be misleading as the speedtest host server is also on Snap's network...) Best speed I've seen was 38Mbps down, 9.3Mbps up Worst speed I've seen was 27Mbps down, 6.85Mbps up (an early test result this one!) That looks like a pretty big spread, but it's actually far less variable than that, and a far cry from the rubbish ADSL2+ available in our area (frequent evening peak-time DNS timeouts with TelstraClear's ADSL2+) Would I recommend the service? Yes. A little patience may be required at installation time, but this is after all "new" for all those involved. Pretty sure I'll be signing up after the trial concludes, and porting my landline number over to the bundled VoIP. Snap also kindly provided a temporary ph number so I can test their VoIP service (this is registering our existing cordless DECT phone to the base station built into the Fritz!box 7340 supplied) Call quality was acceptable for regional toll calls and local calling area calls. Called parties could not distinguish from regular POTS - I thought there seemed a little more audible jitter than usual. Have yet to try calls to NZ mobiles or International numbers, but that's on the to-do list!

Well, got a bit more twist re my UFB install! After I signed up, I received an emaikl that due to Chorus having lots of install requests, the earliest date that they can send a tech for s site survey is 5th Oct! Then, jsut last week, I received another email that they (Chorus) now have the resources and can come around this Friday 24th Aug. Great.... but... due to my little wee girl not being well we've gotta be away up at Starship so we won't be home for the week! Duh... So, now my appointment is postponed until Monday 27th - hopefully I can make it back for the install...
