I'm looking to move to Snap broadband (ADSL, all that is available at my place) but I'm balking at the $345 they ask for supplying the Fritz box. Could anyone recommend me a quality alternative modem/router that I could use? I don't need many extra features, just want high speed and reliable. Thanks!

They do offer the FRITZ!Box for free over a 24 month contract. It is a really awesome device!

I saw that but 24 months is just too long for me, so just hoping I can find something of similar quality for cheaper. Fairly clueless on this kind of hardware unfortunately...

Fritzbox seems very cool (Just got mine for VDSL+VOIP), but if you don't need the VDSL\ATA\etc then I'd agree the price is a bit high. Good to be future proof I guess though.

For ADSL2 A TP-Link TD-W8960N is good bang for buck - I ran one for a while and was quite impressed.  Fairly simple to setup.

If you really want cheap then look at second hand RTA1320 or RTA1320v6 on trade me. Both can be had for $5 or less on trademe and mine has been running very well for the last few months. I changed to one because I wanted a modem to half-bridge with a gargoyle router. I got a decent speed boost through SNR tweaking with it too. (increased from 13mbps to 15.6 mbps) Combine one with a TL-WR1043ND running gargoyle is very powerful and less than $90...

Where are you located? Does the device need to do wireless? The fritzbox is definitely overkill for ADSL2/2+, they are so expensive because they support VDSL2 and they are also a DECT base station for cordless phones.

I have a TP-Link TD8840D that is reliable, before that I used the telecom business 2wire modem that was also very reliable. The TP-Link syncs at 1150kpbs up and 17mbit down vs the 2wire 900kbps up and 18mbit down.

snap should offer term payment over the length of the 12 month plan for the router.

for example $30 extra ontop of the plan or atleast half price like the deal before for a 12 contract

take the 24 month contract with free modem and then if you quit Snap after 12 months you have to pay $145 , so basically  you get the modem for $145 , who knows you may even stay for the 24 months and pay nothing
