SamF: @insane: What's your attenuation and CRC error rates like?

I'll have to check when I'm back home, but seem to recall the downstream being 9db. Last time I looked I had virtually zero CRC errors at all, so perhaps that is why DLM has kept me on DLM-1.

Getting from work to home in about 4ms so quite happy with that :)

20 according to the Fritzbox (was 13 on ADSL2) and Snap reported around 6 when checking online...

SamF: That's so weird!! Your line has issues, your attenuation is pretty bad, your spectrum is pretty shocking and yet you're on 17a!? Maybe it's a mistake and that's the cause of the actual issues? How far are you physically from the cabinet?

Nope I don't think the profile has caused the problems I've been experiencing - it appears to be due to induction on the line. The Chorus guy swapped my ADSL and VDSL lines over so the VDSL was on a completely new line all the way back to the exchange - and it has been rock solid since (fingers crossed). But now my ADSL has gone AWOL because it's on the old VDSL line which had problems. Sorting that out shortly by changing to a new cable from the top of my driveway back to the exchange as it appears to be happening somewhere between those two points. At a guess I'd say I'm about 1km from the exchange.

Yeah, well the telecom requirements for 17a are that the line is less than 300m from the cabinet...

Nothing wrong with 17a or DLM-1.

We have limited info on how DLM actually works and treats a line as stable or unstable.

I have had a good run with 17a on DLM-1. My line may have become damaged and now i have random disconnections that caused the move back to DLM-2.

DLM now thinks DLM-2 is the best profile for my line and is probably not looking at changing it any time soon.

Also 8b i managed 58Mb/s with SNR tweak. Challenge accepted Sam? :)

It would appear nobody has told them that.  :|

I got moved to DLM-1 overnight :)
Took just over 2 weeks from my first sync, and I didn't do any tweaking. Now I'm 44.2/10.3 and 11ms ping to North Island and 25ms to South.

Interesting about this because a lot of the products are advertised as "As fast as your line can handle" and I would imagine those that are "living in the cabinet" would have the technical requirements for that profile to be assigned, thereby allowing the 17a profile to be assigned.

It would put some significant load on the tails though as Chorus provide a 10 Gig E hand off to ISP providers, that would be some significant contention ratios if there were quite a few people on 17a.

100mb/s of International CIR bandwidth wholesale is around $6000 per month, so it's not too bad for large business customers for piece of mind.

Back to the "As fast as your line can handle" though, I'd be interested to test the case against the commerce commission. They are often fairly strict on marketing terms like that.

:)

Hi Everyone, Currently Chorus don't automatically change people to the 17a profile.

We say that our VDSL plan has maximum speeds of 50Mbs/10Mbs, as this is the product we sell, and what our prices are based on.

Think of this like signing up for a 100Mbs UFB fibre plan, and saying 'it can do 1Gbps', yes it could do 1Gbps, but this is not what we are advertising or selling Smile
