Still pretty much the same speed on Telecom ADSL - 1.8MB/s

Can you confirm you tested that by downloading http://fry.snap.net.nz/testfile-100mb ?

http://fry.snap.net.nz/testfile-100mb @ 4.0MB/s (max line rate) just now with only one stream. Snap VDSL.

Its good to take into account that speedtest sometimes uses multiple streams (4 to be correct) to do the download test and 2 for the upload test. This can explain the "factor of 4" that can be experienced by some people.

This can be easily checked under windows (Resources monitor -> Network -> TCP connections tab -> Add Total column -> Filter by total column -> do the speedtest.

I do believe that Snap has sufficient bandwidth locally and to TCL but I still think that TCL as an uptream provider, can do better but this is not the subject to this thread.

Can someone host that same 100mb file somewhere in the US? Or does anyone know of a well connected iperf server located in the US for people to test to?

Seems almost like the buffering issue common with UBA connections whereby a policed handover link drops packets prematurely due to a misconfigured buffer size. (Fixed on EUBA connections).

This is exactly what I want try and prove.

As I said from my original topic, national is excellent, but international is terrible. And I'm not expecting to max out my speed, but now I expect it to perform the same as one would have for VDSL with respect to the speed plan. I'm directly comparing my speed to blair003, as he is on Snap VDSL.

How about kenerl.org for a test in the US? It's East coast but fairly consistent, I can't seem to find an active west coast mirror, but I've seen it used for testing before; not quite the same as the snap file (77M not 100) but:

http://149.20.4.69/pub/linux/kernel/v3.0/linux-3.5.4.tar.bz2

On snap VDSL I get 818KB/s. For comparison the local snap file was around 3M/s last night and around 3.2M/s today.

I put the testfile-100mb on a Linode instance which is on the west coast, there will be issues with other traffic on the host peaking but I don't have any dedicated servers on the west coast.

Here are tests from Telecom ADSL this morning to both that and kernel.org - both around 1.3MB/s - the Linode test should be higher, you can see the effects of other things happening on the host.

A-ha - but Sneakerpimps is getting 3M/sec, and he (she?) will be off the same UFB handover as you. So we have two separate issues here.

SneakerPimps: I'm with Snap UFB 30/10.

Downloading around 3.3MB/sec

I don't know that point of national download test, because the issue is with international.

In order of probability, something is wrong with:

- Your router or router settings, or
- Your computer, or
- The ONT (Chorus terminating equipment), or
- The fibre loop/segment

Pardon me placing the 'customer-side' equipment at the top of the list.

We need to get this stuff up-to-scratch. I'll PM you regarding this. Sneakerpimps, I haven't forgotten about you - you're next

Cheers,
Tim

he.net in fremont. *cough*

i'm only getting 3 to 4 mb/sec from two places in the US. (los angeles and dallas) erk, and 500k/sec from another.

i think speeds back to nz could still be variable to that host.

Yeah, that's a good test. from dallas I get:

# curl -O http://149.20.4.69/pub/linux/kernel/v3.0/linux-3.5.4.tar.bz2
% Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Time Time Current
Dload Upload Total Spent Left Speed
100 77.2M 100 77.2M 0 0 9072k 0 0:00:08 0:00:08 --:--:-- 13.5M

So over 100 megabit peak.

From a non-snap DSL connection I get line rate.

Ok here is what I have on my VDSL connection.

http://fry.snap.net.nz/testfile-100mb this took 21s was maxing at about 5MB a second.
http://149.20.4.69/pub/linux/kernel/v3.0/linux-3.5.4.tar.bz2 took 31s maxing around 4MB a second

I used speed download on the mac with 4 connections there is a bit of a ramp up then down.
Out of interest I downloaded the latest Mac update 10.8.2 combo off Apples site which has a Akamai cache I believe and hit 5MB/s speed so its not Snaps international bandwidth there is a whole lot of factors.

What's it like with a single connection? on an ADSL connection I got line rate and close to line rate with a single connection.

9 100M 9 9497k 0 0 682k 0 0:02:30 0:00:13 0:02:17 641k^C

I think that's just bad routing from fry for me, but I get fast speeds from multiple locations to that 149 address..
