Have been doing some tests to various places around the world, and have noticed that with speedtest.net I get line speed to pretty much everywhere, including far off places such as South Africa.

Has Snap started caching HTTP traffic?

Here's a link to test with from Zimbabwe, which I somehow can download at 1.8MB/s:

It's weird though, my router shows the same speed going through it as what speedtest.net reports, so the data is coming from somewhere. According to my router it is coming from the IPs in the various countries too, not all from a Snap IP or anything. I'm unsure what to make of it.
It also seems to only affect IPv4 traffic, IPv6 traffic is still slower internationally, such as http://proof.ovh.net/

Please visit this page and let us know if there's a "HTTP_VIA" header listed there.

if you have a linux box you can do "tcptraceroute 80" and if it finishes after like 4 hops you're getting transparent proxied.

fwiw, not on snap i get like 6k/sec to that destination, and a ping shows heaps of latency to the last ip.

Nope, no HTTP_VIA headers listed. Neither on v4 or v6.
Downloads from far off sourceforge mirrors are also very fast, but only IPv4 ones.

EDIT: The server tested to in Cape Town was the one hosted by Vodacom.
I'll boot into Linux and try that command out + report back soon.

try doing a download of http://am.meh.net.nz:24/testfile.zip and compare against http://am.meh.net.nz/testfile.zip

the port 24 will bypass most transparent proxies.

900ish KB/s for that test file.
EDIT: 900~KB/s for both files. Both tested with a single stream.

Maybe Snap have just bought a boat load of new bandwidth? :o

as point of comparison i get 6.87 megabit/sec on speedtest.net to that server, which is pretty good for africa.

Lorenceo: 900ish KB/s for that test file.

someone on xtra could pull 1.6 megabytes/sec off there with one connection.

see if it's better on port 80?

Not sure if it will help but here's my trace to dagga.yoafrica.com. I see there is a new hop in mine, mdr.core.snap.net.nz never seen that one before.

i wouldn't think too much of that ip.. i think they just updated their DNS... i imagine they constantly do network upgrades... but considering you get that high ping to that destination, i get that high ping to that destination, and trying from the US I still get that high ping to the destination... i think it showing 16 megabits is just speedtest.net being broken.

that server i listed before is amsterdam... which although high ping tests to have more bandwidth than africa.
