Hey guys, right now i'm on telstraclears Lightspeed 100GB plan which is capped at 15mbps down and 2mbps up.

This is the speed i get right now (on the worldxchange server)

What type off speed increase should i expect to get on the Snap VDSL with Snap Plus plan (50mbps down, 10mbps up) with 150GB data a month, and all you can eat youtube. And last of all what websites/servers (e.g. steam) are unmetered?

I live in South Auckland Pukekohe, so if you live in Pukekohe too and are on this plan could you post your speedtest.net results so i can see the type of speeds you're getting.

Ring up Snap and they will test your line and see what speeds you should expect on VDSL.

Lightspeed plans are only on the HFC network. being in Pukehoke you'll be on a regular ADSL plan which is FS/FS. On a Chorus ISAM this will mean a maximum of around 18Mbps down and 1Mbps up depending on your internal house wiring and distance from the cabinet or exchange.

Your speed increase moving to VDSL2 will also depend entirely on your distance from the cabinet/exchange. You will also need to ensure your internal wiring is suitable for VDSL2, either by installing a master filter or rewiring your connection to ensure your modem is plugged directly into the demarc with no other jackpoints in use in your house.

I always pretty much get line speed to the worldxchange server with VDSL (snap). But it depends on the quality of your writing and line so not too much point speculating.

Ok, thanks for all the help, I'm not sure about the writing in the house as it is pretty old. But i know we are just under 100m or so from the exchange. I'll see what Snap can tell me tomorrow.

Worse case scenario if VDSL is available where you are you would have to pay a wiring charge of $400.

But once you do that, based on my (limited) experience if you are in fact that close to the exchange (the length of the cable) you could expect to see 3x increase in the download speed, 10x increase in the upload speed and your ping would reduce a lot.

Youtube performance often seems to depend on the clip you watch and the popularity of that clip. Sometimes I can stream 1080p without buffering, but occasionally there are issues with a 480p video.

Snap have an unmetered steam server, but you can't tell steam to only connect to that server so it may connect to another server that is metered. See http://www.snap.net.nz/support/content/3/63/en/what-is-the-steam-content-server.html

Steam Limiter works very well to limit steam to the snap servers in my experience.  Unfortunately I think their steam cache server is not fully populated with all steam games and there is no ETA for when it will be (there's a thread kicking around about it somewhere - I wouldn't hold my breath for it getting fixed)

Having said that unmetered data from 1am - 7am means it's not a problem for me at all anymore anyway!
