I've very seriously considering moving to Snap and taking advantage of VoIP. If I switch to the Snap VDSL Plus plan do I still need to pay Telecom for line rental and maintenance?

No, you dont. you would only be paying snap.

No you don't. You can choose to move your existing Telecom phone number across to Snap's VOIP line or get a new phone number. Your physical phone line will then be disconnected. You still need to inform Telecom later when you have been switched over so that they can stop billing you. Here is the way most people switch and is great value. Ask Snap to just take your internet and get a naked VDSL plan. Then port your number to 2Talk and run your phone number through the Fritz Box Snap provides then you can have cheap calling with voicemail, caller ID and free national calls etc for $11 month. There is no need to tell Telecom if the number is ported they will stop billing you from that date.

Always call your provider after new connection for the service that provider was giving you is confirmed as working with new provider. Billing faults are very common, especially continued charging in this scenario. Since Snap! can't provision services on top of an active line you would need to get a new VDSL2 install on a 2nd pair, then port your Telecom number to Snap! to disconnect the services. You need to sort your wiring out for VDSL2 anyway either by installing a master filter or eliminating all jackpoints and wiring the modem into a new DSL only jackpoint so you may want to pay this cost to ensure things are done correctly. *Need help configuring your Linksys ATA or IP Phones for New Zealand? Really well thats what I did and there was no charge. He can sort out the wiring later once the number is ported to 2Talk which should improve the sync rate. Yes I had a jackpoint direct to the ETP already but still no charge and had Naked VDSL with Snap and line with Vodafone on same pair for a week until number ported. This is the way Snap advised and worked perfect.

This is the way Snap advised and worked perfect. I took a similar approach.. 1. Moved ADSL/POTS service to Snap intact 2. Once with Snap I ported my number to 2talk and set it up on my new Fritz!Box 3. Snap upgraded my line from ADSL to VDSL 4. Will disconnect second jackpoint and/or install a splitter myself when I get around to it.. The invoices ended up a mess but the total charges were correct - including the special of 2 months free VDSL rental that they had running at the time. There's plenty of people out there who will do a splitter install cheaper than Chorus as well. Coffeebaron seems to be popular on GZ. Step 2 is optional if you don't want to use Snap's VOIP service (2talk needs a bit of knowhow). Best bet is to explain to the Snap team what you're wanting. They're clued up and very helpful.

The possible $400 install costs scared me away for now. Fortunately I went back and had a chat with my provider (Telstra) who agreed to reduced our monthly costs by $70 without sacrificing any services! So we're giving them another year and we'll see how the VDSL/VoIP option shapes up.
