timmmay: I read on another thread that 70+ people in Wellington have been waiting a year or more for UFB, thanks to Wellington Electricity. Seems that legislation should've been passed to make this easier.


It's not just UFB. It also affects copper services as well. Chorus (or any of the LFCs) don't have an automatic right to use poles that below to other infrastructure providers.

Here's an actual story about a couple in Petone http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/local-papers/hutt-news/9441481/Hardly-ultra-fast-to-hook-up - the comments of which are even funnier, somebody complaining their wireless is broken and it's all Telecom's fault.

Interesting. They were complaining about a month, I'm already at three months and I wouldn't surprise me if it actually took six months. Do I have to get my MP involved to get this done?

Fortunately my existing cable connection is pretty good so I'm not actually in a hurry, it's just frustrating as I've made changes to my internal network presuming UFB would be available in a reasonable timeframe.

Do note where they say
On Thursday, Chorus notified Wellington Electricity of 60 sites where customers were waiting for connections. Wellington Electricity will take three days to assess each site, then it may take up to three weeks before Chorus can begin making a connection. If poles need replacing it will take longer.


Likelyhood is that your quite close to it being done :)

90 people and three days to assess is 180 days, if they have one person do it. Hopefully they're a bit smarter, and I assume they are, they have lots of contractors. My site is already assessed, they just need permission to do it.

I need to be there so they can test it and validate it, and I can't take time off work since I have a new job, back when we ordered it it'd have been fine.

Yeah, At the least I would say they would have about 4 people on it. At the least. and thats asuming that this single person can't do more than one site every three days, which lets be honest, is a bit unrealistic.

Latest update: apparently the power pole outside my house isn't suitable for aerial deployment of UFB, so Chorus are looking at other options to get UFB into the house. No estimate of when they'll do this. I only found this out as I called Snap with another question and asked them to check while I was on the phone.

14 weeks (3.5 months) after I requested UFB installation I've requested the Snap escalate this with Chorus. I have no idea whether they will or not, but at this point I think it was worth asking.

Given the news story that a couple went to their MP after one month I think I've been reasonably patient. I may try my MP if Snap can't sort it out, see if they can motivate chorus to do something. I doubt it.

Christ, I'm glad there are no power or telephone poles in my street or neighbourhood at all. If I ever decide to get UFB, it will be all underground and no one will have to ask if it's ok to string it from another companies' pole.

Latest update is Snap can't get any information from Chorus about how they plan to get UFB to my house. The system seems quite dysfunctional.

Are there any ways I can get this accelerated? Going on four months is silly.

Going on four months now, I've contacted my MP Peter Dunne to see if he can help with this. New Zealand has spent a fortune to roll out this fiber, it goes right past my house, the indoor equipment is installed, and they can't get the fiber another 10 meters into the house.

I'm not really particularly concerned when it's installed. I have an internet connection that works fine. I just think it's ridiculous that NZ has spent all this money laying fiber, people complain that uptake is poor, then are unable to connect people to it who want to use it.
