Talked to Snap today. They have peak daytime commercial usage as discussed. Also plan to limit the amount of "Nightowl" users. So finding it hard to resist an "all-you-can-eat" I joined. Sadly have to leave Xnet (the only time I have ever felt regret when leaving an ISP). I will let you know what it is like. Regards, Bruce.

Well... Ive taken the plunge and ditched Ihug and registered for Night Owl late last night and checked my voicemail late afternoon to confirm my account had been set up as of tonight so woo hoo. Joined. Night owl package. Connected next day. Set up web page, and other help. Excellent. average wait = 5 minutes. 786 kb/s to LA at 7.25 pm. for a budget price I am happy. As download from usenet groups. regards Bruce.

Hi, so hows it going on the Snap night owl plan? do they shape p2p? are the speeds good/consistent? whats your ping like. im moving house in a week and need to sort out what isp im gonna go for, and i think the snap night owl plan is just right for me! Thanks.

At 7 pm 100 KBytes increasing to 300 KBytes at Midnight. These speeds are to a stateside news server. P2P do not know, phone and ask, got some good english speaking techs on help desk. I phoned them 3 times re setting up web pages etc. Average wait 3-5 minutes. And excellent tech help. regards Bruce.

So time to bring out the mspaint skills again... How can this be a viable business model.. ones that's going to give good performance to users? Do they have some significant amount of day time non peak traffic that makes it economically viable for them to maintain a green line somewhere near the peak of the red line? Green line: ISP's international bandwidth to the US Red line: Customer's demand for bandwidth to the US

To answer my own question Snap apparently provides internet access for the University of Canterbury, apparently they have something like 40,000 users. So it makes sense they would have enough traffic outside of 6pm-12 to maintain a much higher green line. Interesting.
