It's so nice to be able to write something in unconditional praise of an ISP.

I have been experiencing poor performance with Orcon for some time, and last week, switched to Vodafone. That was far worse. I wasn't getting an ADSL2 connection, and transfers were seriously bad no matter what time of day, we're talking 20/40 KBP/Sec to the US. It wasn't exactly worth the wait. I signed up on 22 May and didn't get connected until 11 June.

After reading the Epitiro Report and reading other comments here on Geekzone, I decided that I'd give Snap a go. What a great experience it's been! I signed up late on Monday, and was connected by Tuesday afternoon.
Hold times on the phone have been minimal, and everyone I've spoken to has been competent. What a pleasure it was to actually talk to someone not only in the same country as me, but in the same city and using the same exchange, who told me the kind of performance he was getting when I inquired about signing up.

And as for performance, well wow. I have got over 1 MB/sec on some downloads from the US, although typically I'm between 200/700 KBP/Sec which is a huge improvement over what I was getting. Downloads from local sites like Radio new Zealand have come close to 2 MB/Sec.

I hesitated to write this message a bit because it would be sad if everyone jumped on the bandwagon and slowed them down, but then I thought hey, I really should share the love, because I know a number of Orcon users are still having issues.

These guys are just brilliant! Efficiency, speed and damn good service still exist.

Well done, I am considering snap after my contract with Telstra Clear Cable finishes this year definitely one to put on my diary to call when that happens. Thanks for sharing your experience. They are one of the pioneers in Christchurch.

We considered going with them, they listen very well to suggestions, i made a suggestion for a lower data/cheaper FS/FS plan and it was added within a week. Someone else suggested $1/1gb data blocks rather than $2/1gb data blocks and it was changed within days.

But being in hamilton it's usually better when you're playing on an auckland server for it not to go down to christchuch first.

How are the speeds during peak hours?

Speeds at peak are perhaps a fraction slower, but we're talking say 800 KB/Sec where I might get over 1 MB/Sec at other times.

And that is still pretty quick for peak time usage so that is awesome. I am with Supra on one of their Naked DSL plans, but I still experience the very slow international speeds during peak hours, and while they've been good to deal with I've also been fobbed off in regards to querying about the slow speeds so might have to consider changing to Snap as well! Do you know what exchange you are connected to? Do they have their own equipment installed in exchanges?

I'm connected to the Linwood Exchange here in Christchurch.

Snap don't have their own equipment installed in exchanges. They are based here in Christchurch, and apparently supply bandwidth to the University.

Howdy,

I suppose it's about time for a Snap Geekzone presence. It's always good to be pointed to topics like this by our customers.
Thanks for your kind words. I'll pass on the good news to the guys in the form of beer (being Friday and all).

Just as a tiny tidbit of information:

We have network presence in Auckland and our business customers interconnect directly through it. We intend to have a second Ethernet handover for DSL customers up north by the end of this year, in saying this our DSL based in the North Island customers typically only experience around 40ms max of increased latency over an Auckland terminated service.

Our helpdesk staff are all trained as Teir1 and Teir2 support agents in both Technical and Accounts queries, this is why if you call our number we don't have a complicated press 1 then 4 then 2 system or a fancy robotic voice, you will just get a single person than can help you with 95% of enquiries. 100% of our helpdesk team works out of our office in Christchurch.

Been with Snap since May 1 and its been great. My synch speeds increased also. Their support team get onto problems immediately.

Unlike most who have switched to Snap because of poor speeds with their previous ISP. I joined Snap for the Night Owl plan for unlimited data. The 7am to 7pm 128k download wasnt an issue as im at work during those hours. My overall speeds have been good even during peak.

I've also had direct contact with one of the head honchos re different types of plans and to get a personalised reply is fantastic.

Been with Telecom, Ihug, ICONZ, Wired Country over several years but the response from Snap has been refreshing.

My 2 cents Laughing

I’ve been with Snap (actually they started out as “inet”) for 8 or 9 years now. And have never felt the need to change ISP’s….  Always on the ball and if you need help with anything they are only a phone call away and you will talk to people that are competent and not reading off a script for the most part… Just like most of you have found, they are just good old kiwi service. They will be getting bigger and bigger, so no need to worry about speed. When I signed up, I think they only had one or two severs. Cant imagine how many they have now :-) 10/10 in my books.

Snap was formed out of NetAccess and iNet - about 50% each
